THIS WILL BE MY FIRST YEAR FLYING TO OSH-KOSH WITH A POSSIBLE FLIGHT OF THREE. I KNOW THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO FLY IN WITH BUDDIES AND WANT TO CAMP NEXT TO THEM, ARE THERE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS OR ADVISE? WE WILL PROBABLY BE ARRIVING EARLY ON SATURDAY TO BEAT THE LARGE MASS ARRIVALS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY.

Early on Saturday really isn’t early. Depending on weather that can be crunch day.

Should read the NOTAM. A flight of three really isn’t a thing in it. You’ll all be single file in the correct amount of trail or you’ll be told to go around and try again over Fisk.

You’ll also likely be split to different runways.

Your best bet to pull off side by side camping in North 40 is to go way earlier than Saturday and have someone pay for all three campsites then hold up signs that you need to go “back” to your site, later.

But the system really isn’t set up real well for that so expect challenges. Be nice to volunteers and they’ll be nice to you.

@flyingcheesehead May have good ideas. He arrives and leaves and returns to his campsite some years.

Flight of three whats? Unless you're flying the warbird approach, you'll be split up on approach. At least in Vintage if you say you are in a group that just arrived, we'll leave room for the other two if you ask nice. Have to believe it isn't much of an issue in the North 40.

Check Aviation101 on youtube. His Osh trip they arrived as a flight of three, they split single file and I forgot how they communicated that they were a "flight" and wanted to stay grouped but it is in there

Just make sure you scream at the controllers and write your sign in small lower case letters.

I hear flights of N coming in all the time. Yes you can do it, and if you guys can stick together in taxi they'll put you together on the flight line. It's done all the time. And yes, the all caps really is hard on the eyes. That said, for your first time out I'd advise you not to. Oshkosh can be a fairly unforgiving environment to fly and navigate. Lots and lots of airplanes, even Saturday morning. Might be nice if you had an approach under your belt before you have the additional issues of a formation flight.

Has anyone in your group flown to Oshkosh before? I would suggest that you don't even think about doing a flight of three unless your lead is experienced at flying into the show. There's simply too much going on to make it safe to come in your first time in formation.

Also, start by reading this year's NOTAM. It covers flights of multiple aircraft, and you need to know everything else in there as well. When you're done with that, come on back and ask about any more detailed questions you may have at that point (and you should have some). I'd be glad to help once you have the proper foundation in place - Otherwise, what I tell you probably won't make any sense.

Signed,

A veteran of dozens of Airventure arrivals

Thanks for the input. Yes, we have all flown in before, however never in a flight. Just wondering if there was any secrets other than telling Fisk Control. Sorry for the all caps.

Nope, nothing more than that, other than the same three things we always tell people going to Oshkosh.

1. Read the NOTAM
2. Read the NOTAM
3. Read the NOTAM
