Can I connect my Android smart phone which is running Garmin Pilot to the Stratus ESGi for instruments, weather, etc.?

Thanks,
Jay

The Stratus ESGi doesn’t talk to Garmin Pilot. I’m trying to get used to WingX, but I’m more familiar & used to Garmin Pilot.

Right now I still hook up my GDL-39 to feed the Garmin app on the IPad mini.

Any idea why they wouldn't support Garmin Pilot? If I just wanted (er, need for private pilot training) to have turn & bank, is there a free app I could use just to get me through the training that receives the input from the Stratus?

I understand it to be the other way around. Most Garmin devices only talk to the Garmin Pilot app and the Garmin Pilot app only listens to Garmin devices. I think when the Stratus first came out, it would only talk to the Foreflight app, but I think that has changed and it now speaks GDL-90, and is compatible with just about all apps out there. ADS-B IN was blessed with the GDL-90 protocol and with Garmin equipment. That Garmin doesn't offer GDL-90 and instead mandates a proprietary protocol is something that should give potential customers pause.

Just what you said, John. I contacted Appareo and this is their response:

"Thanks for contacting Appareo. I don't believe Garmin has their app supporting the use of the 3i, but you can certainly reach out to Garmin to confirm. It is the app developers discretion on what products they choose to support. When we are notified by developers that they have made their app compatible to work with the Stratus 3 or 3i, we add it to our online list of apps that we know work."

I'm going to try and contact Garmin and see what they say. I wonder if they will care if I tell them I might switch to ForeFlight so I can use my iPad with the Stratus ESGi.

I have Garmin Pilot(until May) and WingX. I’ve been all though the drill with Status NOT talking to Garmin Pilot. It can be a tad vague in the online literature.

For now I still hook up my GDL-39 when I want to feed Garmin Pilot.

Foreflight is an easy choice with Status ESG 3i too.

Just to be clear, it is, apparently, Garmin Pilot that does not LISTEN to Stratus. Just making sure not to ding Appareo for something that's not their fault. Seems like Garmin is trying to force us to use their hardware for the GPS and ADSB sources for Garmin Pilot. Sucks.

I’m not blaming anyone. Just letting a user know the deal. I knew ahead of time.

If you don’t understand why Garmin doesn’t provide connectivity for non Garmin products, then you don’t understand Garmin’s quest for a monopoly.
