Special Issuance timelines

What does your AME say about the whole ordeal? I believe you said that the FAA hasn't even asked for more info, no contact from them whatsoever. You had a 35 day delay from the early 2019 shutdown as well right?

Thanks for sharing your story. I hope it gets resolved soon with a positive outcome.

He originally told me I was a simple straight forward case compared to other SSRI path 2 applicants and should expect 2-3 months. I told him at the time I had read on here to expect a bit more and he acknowledged it varies. I didn’t ask him anything for 6 months. Then monthly since. Last month he seemed annoyed with my inquires so I stopped calling him and started inquiring with local FSDO and Oklahoma. Basically told me it was the process. Reached out to a local Congressman as well. Not to advocate for me, but for improvements to the process. He chairs the FAA committee in DC. His office seemed to think a year was not acceptable either especially after the initial investment of time, doctors, and positive cogscreen for a self-grounding revenue airman in a two crew environment. Shorten the time for approval and they will build incentive for those waivering on disclosing their health issues.

FAA has not asked me for anything nor sent me any letters indicating “in process” since my submittal 12/17/18.

I did submit prior to shutdown.

Happy there is a path, but the mental health elephant in the room will not get better until people can return to the cockpit sooner. I am nearly at 2.5 years since I grounded myself. I did not think it would take that long.

On the bright side, I hope the med is making you feel better.

I'm 16 weeks in on Neurological review in OKC for a 3rd class SI.

Do you think it will stay in OKC? I was under impression that all psych get pushed to DC after a stop in OKC.

@lbfjrmd

It's still in OKC now, I had hit my face with NO adverse effects, but I was admitted to the ER with facial fractures. Full MRI, Psych eval, NeuroCog, etc. I was told the DC committee only meets every three months, next time around March 2020.

If not for my personal experience, I would be fairly encouraged in reading the waiting times that folks in this thread report. Mine, however, is 16 months and counting. Finally, I hired a lawyer and file a Writ of Mandamus with Federal Court to force FAA to do their job. That gives them 30 days to "get off the pot". No news yet and it appears they may be ignoring the Writ.

I am at 7 months of waiting for a 3rd class SI (since September 2019). Have been told they have all the data / info, just waiting on the last cardio-related review. Like some others, have paused training at 7 hours, pending the outcome of OKC. Made a couple of phone calls, don’t think that will help the process much.

James,

I am wondering if you have any new updates on your SI? I am in an identical situation as you are. Self grounded, SSRI, commercial pilot 1st class medical. Went through the whole HIMS program with successful COG screen. Got an update mail after 6 months from FAA. Updated within a week. Reached out to State Senator to reach out in my behalf along with others in my situation. Currently around 9.5 months since AME approval. I would love to hear back from you with any updates. Thanks!

As he's been inactive here recently, folks should know that Malibu Jim is flying again (Since May 2020) :).
