Flying a Cherokee 180. Installed a complete Garmin panel including 2 G5's and GFC 500. I seem to be the only pilot not completely happy with it. I had a roll servo fail and a constant problem with Heading disengaging for no apparent reason. It gives an aural warning then reverts to roll default. It always happens when I just break ground even when just armed.(auto pilot not engaged) Then at altitude, reset the heading and engage the auto pilot. It usually disengages after about 5 minutes. Reset it and it usually works but by then I'm usually switching to NAV and that works fine. It's just TRACK and NAV that has the problem. Obviously,I can't trust it while being vectored for an approach. Changed the GAD 29B but didn't change. Avionics tech is scratching his head.
I'm desperate for ideas and any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks,

This is what Garmin tech support is for, and downloading G5 data logs and emailing it to them.

Seems you assume incorrectly.

It"s just TRACK and HDG that has the problem (I wrote it wrong)

How long has it been installed? Did it ever work properly? Mine thus far has been flawless but I am only two months in so far. I wonder if your plane is out of rig for it to burn out a servo so quick. Do the other pilots use it?

A fellow pilot with a -600 in her Baron, had similar issues of odd issues and the auto pilot not working (also turns out the shop had wired one of the servos through the wrong CB...). Garmin finally replaced the head unit and when we did approaches on Friday, everything seemed to work fine.

I didn't know I could data log. That is awesome. That would be a good way to debrief approaches.

It turned out to be a compass issue. swung the compass (recalibrated the G5)again and flew for an hour in all modes and it's working fine.
It was an early installation and other early people had some servo issues. Garmin never owned the problem but they changed them out fast.
Thanks for you help
