Only minor injuries

The inspector reported that the pilot was conducting a gender reveal flight for a friend. He added that there were 2 persons on board the 1 seat airplane. He reported that the pilot reported he had trimmed the airplane, flew at a low altitude, dumped 350 gallons of pink water, and the airplane immediately stalled. In a follow up conversation on October 24, 2019: The inspector reported that he thought he pilot moved to the right and the passenger was sitting on the edge of the seat on the left side.

The pilot reported that he dumped about 350 gallons of water out of 625 gallons in the hopper. The airplane “got too slow,” aerodynamically stalled, and he could not get it back. He added that there were 2 people on board with minor injuries. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Pipe bombs. Firearms.
Ya, that's what I think of when I hear GRP.
(wtf are these idiots thinking?)
Everyone wants a bigger event. Well, it's pretty hard to beat a pipe-bomb death and a crashed airplane. But someone will do it. (There were multiple shootings at a gender reveal party in Cincinnati, with nine shot, one fatally, and several kids injured; the pregnant woman wasn't pregnant at all, and three known drug gangs were involved. Perhaps that's what soured me on these things.)

If we can put the event aside, I go have an important question.

Aerodynamicly, what happened? He dumped water from a tank, changed the CG way aft and then because he had a passenger, could not not get the nose down again?

I’m assuming that the pilot dumped the 350 gallons via the emergency dump as the photo shows a spray boom attached and not a spreader. He moved 3,000lbs of water in around 60 seconds or less. That’s a heck of a moment change on the CG. I’m not surprised he couldn’t keep it under control, especially with a second person in the seat.

Whenever I do 137 tests I never ask the pilot to add more then a 100 gallons to the hopper. They’re extremely lucky that the 502 is built like a tank. The roll cage is what kept them alive.

350 gal x 8.34 lb-per-gal = 2919 lb. That's a lot of weight shift. Plus the cockpit probably behind the CG, better trim down a lot and hold the stick. Had electric trim ready.

When my son was born four years ago, we had this crazy new idea of waiting until he was born to find out his gender. It was a lot more exciting than smoke bombs, water drops or cakes.
Same here.

All our baby clothes for the first 6 months were green and yellow. Found out when they handed me the little buggers.

Apparently this has become a 'thing' in the last 10 years, coinciding with the ascent of Instagram. It's right up there with 'death by selfie' .

My wife's first cousin's daughter had a GRP recently. But they just Incorporated it as part of the games they played at the party. It was totally harmless and not dangerous to anyone. I've got nothing against that. But to put people's health and lives at risk, that goes way into the realm of stupidity.

I've attended exactly three gender reveal parties. All three were in pleasant hospital birthing rooms, attended by my wife, me, our doctor, and eventually the child being born at the time. The genders were obvious and revealed in the most awesome, miraculous way possible...through birth. I will not be attending any further "gender reveal parties."

A GRP for a hermaphroditic baby would be interesting. Might be worth attending.

We did it that way, too. Real old school.

Thread drift...apologies... I know and enjoy the first and last quotes in your sig (the original Blade Runner is still one of my favorite movies, despite Harrison Ford's opinion of it, and I like Phillip K, Dick's work), but don't recognize the Banjo/rye bread one. Curious.. can you elucidate?

There really is not that much of a CG shift when dumping from an Air tractor. Flying the 602 from full to empty required almost no change in pitch trim.

what happens is there is almost instantaneously 3000lbs more lifting force from the wing than needed and the airplane starts climbing which causes the nose to rise rapidly due to aerodynamics not cg.

the pilots mistake in flying technique was most likely a very aggressive pitch over to recover the airplane which unloaded the wing at a low energy state and high power setting causing a torque roll.

they were flying a 602. Not a 502. It probably did matter in this accident because the step from 502-602 is where the engine changes to the large series Pratt

the flight characteristics I’m talking about are why there are limitations on the 802 used for fire bombing. The setup is a little flap and slower airspeed. Go to fast and wings can fail or directional control is lost.

At the risk of being considered grumpy, I can't imagine why anyone but the principles would care what gender a couple was having. It's not like someone would have something unique.

My thoughts exactly.

If the pregnancy is already known, what is there to really celebrate after that?
Unless they already have boy(s) or girl(s) and are really hoping for the other.
But then what happens?

Everybody sighs in disappointment and says "I guess we can still love it"?

Pink or blue confetti with the wah wah sound?

A piñata of the baby and everyone yells booooo!!! and beats the crap out of it with sticks?

Someone yells "I guess it's abortion time!" and everybody cheers?

Does anyone know if this 602 had the optional passenger seat?

If not, I suspect the pilot is gonna have an even worse time.

It’s no different than these morons that live-stream bad things happening, etc...most have become obsessed with getting their 15 minutes, to a degree not seen before. I even saw one where a young woman was live streaming driving drunk/high, then after the crash live streamed her sister dying. Sick POS, and we seem to be creating and endless supply.

I truly believe that when the pluses and minuses are tallied, the world has become a worse place with the Internet and smartphones, not better.

Another "modern tradition travesty" that saddens me is what the "first dance" at a wedding has become. Before I go further, it IS warming to see that folks are, at least, still getting married. I recall vividly still, more than 37 years after the fact, my first dance with my wife. The whole world disappeared.. just the two of us lost in each other. (OK... get the vomiting over with....I can take it..) Now, the first dance is just another "Look at ME!!! Look at US!!! Aren't we sooo cool! Look what we can do... aren't we totally OUTRAGEOUS?!??" event, instead of a solemn, meaningful, heartfelt moment that, hopefully, comes once in a lifetime. I know everyone's different, sees things in other lights... I get it. However, like Christmas, weddings have become big business and more about the "spectacle" and less about... well... what they REALLY both are. Yet more casualties at least contributed to by the current "selfie" "social media" world.

How do you mix 63 different shades of Tannerite ?

I thought a gender reveal was just some guy in a trenchcoat with wearing nothing underneath it.

Also how inconsiderate of the parents assigning a gender without asking the kid how they identify. The nerve!!

Yeah, people sometimes don't consider that sex is biology, and gender is a social construct.

I saw this comment today:

”In the future you won’t have a gender until you kill someone and take theirs”

Can't believe nobody posted this yet:

According to the report, it seems the two were sitting side by side on the single seat.

Everyone knows you’re supposed to sit tandem...I know a few guys who got Ag Wagon checkouts that way.
