FAA develops plan to preserve aircraft owners privacy as ADS-B becomes mandatory

Reading the fine print, it's aimed at the business aircraft, e.g
  • U.S registered
  • 1090 MHz ADS-B equipped
  • Using a third-party call sign
  • Flying in domestic U.S. airspace
Read all the details at https://www.faa.gov/nextgen/equipadsb/privacy/

What's interesting is the article on Avweb

https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/faa-acts-to-preserve-ads-b-data-privacy/

with the comment at the bottom
"An “anonymous” mode is available for aircraft using the 978 UAT form of ADS-B Out but only when not squawking a discreet transponder code and the installed hardware supports it."

Even with that the 3rd party networks who don't use FAA data can still pretty easily figure out who you are, if they decide they care, would be a fun data analysis challenge for someone... If N12345 lands at X and the next day a randomly assigned code leaves X and flies around to the same airports as N12345 it's pretty obviously still N12345. Also, just one plane spotter with a camera and a timestamp will also give you up.

It will still take a little bit of work to identify you. If anonymity is important to you, just try not to be the low hanging fruit.

Your tail number is splashed on your plane in great big numbers. if someone really wants to know where you're going they just need cameras at airports. Don't even need people, things could be triggered by motion sensors. If someone really wants to know where you're going they will find out. It will be nicer if they don't have to just click on a web site and get it.

I know that numbers are blocked on Flightradar. No problem, I just match up with Flightaware, or vice-versa.

So the private sector creeps will have a hard time tracking, but the government creeps (who are the biggest threat to most) will have all your tracks? Think a ADSB that just send N0 when set to 1200 would be best, or if you’re not going into busy airspace (most of the country) don’t bother with ADSB out.

Don’t land at airport ;)

So it will be easier to follow the drug runners...I like it already.

Remember anyone can be a “drug runner” or “terrorist”, even people who are not, there is a reason the bill of rights is the way it is.

When the government operates like a hammer, all citizens look like nails.

Id wager all parties involved in that murder are collecting their pensions and thanked for their “service” by mouth breathers.

Christian missionary family shot down for not having an authorized flight plan. Mother and infant daughter killed.
Despite not fitting the CIA's profile of a drug runner, and despite objections by the CIA, the hotdog Peruvian pilots shot them down.

It is an instructive and frightening video, well worth the 5 minutes. If you look at history, vastly more citizens have been murdered by their own governments than by war with other countries.

I love this quote, According to Ed Bolen, president and CEO of the National Business Aviation Association, the lack of a privacy solution “has been a disincentive for some operators to equip with ADS-B. No one should have to surrender their privacy and security just because they board an airplane.”

Translation, when the CEO is visiting his mistress we don’t think the wife should know where he is.

Pretty sure the mistresses don’t require a plane to visit, since they likely work in the same town and often the same office. Ask Steve Easterbrook.

Or translation, people who are not accustomed to being treated like peasants don’t like to be tracked and searched like peasants.

Go start following a senator with your car and see how long it takes for a cop to show up and work really hard to bust you for anything, on that note even the kingsmen, go follow a cop around for a few blocks and see how it works out. Folks who are not trained to take it, they don’t like being tracked/followed/searched.
