By now, you’ve hopefully heard the news that uAvionix completed the acquisition of AeroVonics’ fantastic cockpit display technology this week. We’ve hardly been able to contain our excitement in sharing this news with you. It is a milestone event in the growth of our company, and I wanted to take the opportunity to enumerate why. If you observe all that we do as a company, you might note that venturing into cockpit displays doesn’t seem to fit our MO. If you’ve read our press releases, they almost always begin with:

“uAvionix, designer and manufacturer of Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) equipment for manned and unmanned aircraft…”

And they always end with an “About uAvionix” section which contains the following statement:

“uAvionix was founded in 2015 with the mission of bringing safety solutions to the unmanned aviation industry in order to aid in the integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS).“

So, with that in mind, we up and buy a General Aviation (GA) cockpit display! Have we given up on UAS? Is this some sort of massive pivot in strategy? Have we lost our way, our minds? [Spoiler Alert] No. But before I elaborate on that, let’s take a moment to celebrate what this does mean for our GA offerings, because if you actually read those “About uAvionix” portions of our press releases, you’ll learn that we’re pilots too – and we think the AeroVonics displays are just so cool!

Well, at least it wasn’t BK.....oh wait.

Keep an eye on the BK website. First, the uAvionics gear will be rebranded to some retarded name that makes no sense, UAvionics will act like it was just opening up the market, then BK announces at SnF with glee that once again, they were incapable of engineering anything themselves so they went and bought product from a small start up that found a niche and is making huge steps in small GA.

Just wait..... you’ll see.

I always had the impression that Aerovonics was a 1-2 person operation. If that's true, then this might be a step up. If that's not true, then I'm not sure what to think.

I hope this means the continued development and support. I was watching and planning for the autopilot integration to replace my dg and ah that are both tied to my century 4. It was going to be a cheaper alternative to an Aspen.

and cheaper than dual G5's while keeping the panel looking uniform.

Exactly the reasons I was waiting. Plus, I believe that they were going to do what they said they'd do, i.e. make the certified product the same price as the experimental unit, full integration with Century legacy autopilots, and produce the HSI the public asked for. I've noticed discussion of the HSI has dropped off the product page. I emailed with questions, so I'll report back if I hear back from them.

Makes sense to me, what is their market after jan2020? If their product line is only adsb, their market dries up on jan 2 2020. They needed to diversify there product line for the future.

^^This^^

And with the acquisition will come higher prices. They always do.

Great, instead of having 2 dinky companies that most likely will fail, Now there is 1 with twice as many products.

In this case, the certified AV-30 went up 25% from $1600 to $2000. At least the experimental version is still the same. Also, the AV-20 (base model without AoA/Attitude) is gone and there's no longer a $100 promotional discount for the premium version AV-20S.

Am I missing something? How is UAvionix and Aerovonics related to BK.

BK recently bought Trutrak. uAvionix recently bought Aerovonics. There's a pattern of big avionics companies buying the smaller ones and then jacking up the price of newly acquired equipment.

Not exactly. There are a lot of GA planes that will not be ADSB out equipped on Jan 2. Many won't be "grounded" as they are far from airspace that requires ADSB. Planes will get resold and they may then need ADSB out. Or the ADSB out breaks and they need a replacement. The market will continue to dry-up after Jan 1, 2020, but it will take some time to approach near-zero.

But yes, the market will decline and that makes the business less worthwhile. So, they need to adapt or they will disappear.

Talking to 2 friends of mine who are brokers are telling me plane resale prices are downgraded without ADS-B. New buyers without any intention of installing ADS-B are using it as a negotiating point. Pay now and enjoy the benefits or pay later on resale.

If I had a plane yet without ADS-B and no pending install date, I'd probably wait until the av shop back log clears and prices come down. Just have to stay below 10,000 in Echo and outside Charlie and Bravo airspace, with some small exceptions.

I'd take the hit on the $2k + 1 hour install for a uAvionix *Beacon until the backlog clears. Maybe I could get $500-$1000 back on reselling the *Beacon.

I gave AeroVonics two $100 deposits several months ago for a pair of AV-30 units. I am trusting that they will honor my deposit AND honor the lower pre-release price. However I am waiting to hear anything. It's not only the money, but also the fact that my panel upgrade has been waiting for these units to be available. If there are delays, I understand this - all I expect is good communication.

so I just inflate the price based on what they would try to haggle for adsb and still get my asking price

Probably not. The new owner would then still have to have an STC......if uAvionics would sell her one.

I don’t believe that the skybeacon requires a full STC purchased from the company. The STC on the company website lists approved models, but also details a process where the bead on can be installed by an AP/IA in an unapproved model as long as there is no airframe modification.

if you can install it in an airplane not listed in the STC, how could you have to purchase a piece of paper not even listing your plane?
