I think it's safe to say that GA (including corporate) at BOS is dead effective 10/14/19.

Starting 14 October, you'll need PPR within 72 hours, already high fees expected to skyrocket and no RON.

What this means is that BED is going to suck!

Prior permission required

remain overnight.

Military abbreviations. Or is it ICAO. I can't keep track of the alphabet sources lol
It's government in general. Not just military. You see it in NOTAMs and AFD.

In essence, what this means is that virtually all the corporate traffic will now be going to BED.

I’ll be curious to see if other airports of similar size follow suit.

The "no RON" part seems the sketchiest part of this to me. I'm sure they're using the 9-11/SIDA/the children excuse to push that airline hegemony agenda.

KSLC is going down that path. Long-term planning meetings this year has the airport phasing out GA. The super suck part is that there is only one airport in the suburbs (U42) that is already being used at a fairly high capacity. Everything else is an hour or more drive, and the closest of those (BTF) is a tiny facility sandwiched under a narrow Bravo corridor. Not sure how many more planes could be absorbed there.

Wow, that's interesting to hear about SLC. GA has basically their own runway on the East side where the FBO's and hangars are located. What kind of stupid are they selling there these days to make this even come close to making any sense? :( Sad day for sure if that happens.

Apparently the issue is the airport is taking over 50% of the existing Signature ramp space for international flight parking. The ramp was very tight before. There will literally be no room to park transients.

Seems that they think GA traffic is somehow reducing commercial traffic, as in the controllers are limited by balancing the two, and removing GA will maybe increase profits through more commercial traffic. I suppose the east side runway 17-35 would be strictly for commercial and military use. Really stupid, and I sadly anticipate there will be a few mid-airs over the valley by pushing GA to U42. Of course then they will ban GA entirely from the region.

No real surprise. GA is effectively dead at DCA, LGA's not far behind, so no surprise about BOS. And the "open to all" thing appears to be a non-issue with the current Federal structure.

True. The biggest impact though is going to be on BED. It’s not like there was any piston GA traffic to speak of flying into Logan, but now virtually all corporate traffic is going to be going into BED which is going to become a lot more like TEB.

Do you need a slot like LGA or you’ll just have to call the airport manager or something get get PPR? Not really surprising. Massport blows. We fly the owner of one of our Cirrus’s into BOS a lot. Maybe we’ll have to find a new airport.

I doubt you’ll need a slot. From what I understand, it’s not so much an ATC issue as it’s a matter of the airport taking over the ramp space.

Gotcha. It’s always bumper to bumper in the ramp every time I fly in there GA.

That was a good question, I was wondering the same

By the way, why do you guys fly into Logan? Unless he(she/they) going to a meeting directly in downtown Boston or someplace like Swampscott then KBED is a great little spot

BED is going to be a chit show. Glad I'm not based there any more!
depending on where you live and where you are trying to go, you also have Beverly, Lawrence, and a bunch of others

Sounds good to me. The place is saturated all too often, with hours long EDCTs for scheduled airline traffic to get in due to approach congestion. There are lots of close GA options.

Logan is more convenient for downtown, but like I was saying, very little piston traffic goes there because of the already high fees. But there still was a healthy amount of corporate turbine traffic there which will is why BED is going to become a real headache for those of us who have been using it.

I did fly my Baron into Logan a couple years ago. It wasn’t cheap, but fun to get the experience. Won’t be able to do that again.

His daughter lives in downtown Boston so BOS is the most convenient location for that. I’ve flown into BED a few times. I know fuel is crazy expensive in BED but I don’t remember if the fees are bad as well.

I like Norwood. Not as convenient to downtown, but works fine for the 128 corridor.

DL hub opened in BOS this week. They intend to run a bunch of narrow bodies to Europe as part of the plan (And try to run JetBlue out). I imagine the pass-thru and parking revenue from just one of those flights will bring in more to Massport than a week of GA flights, even turbines.

PPR (in my experience) has never been an ATC thing, but airfield management gets all kinds of bent out of shape if we let someone land without one. It all has to do with ramp space or some other convoluted computation that we've never understood.

I can honestly see the problem at BOS. They are land/sea locked with no more space for parking. As airline travel grows, they need more room and there just isn't any more to be had. Its pretty simple.

Guess massport paid for 100% if the airport?

Entities like Massport and NYC Port Authority are perfect examples of unelected bureaucracies doing whatever they wish, with no accountability or consequences.

We have our own smaller version in Dallas, DART. They rake in billions from sales tax proceeds, and pretty much spend it in whatever fashion they choose.

Bureaucracies and little tin-pot fiefdoms are ruining this country... Small bogs. Much akin to the "swamp" many decry.

You are either wealthy enough to own or lease a jet... Or poor enough to voluntarily load yourself into a sardine can to travel.

I wish it didn't have such an effect on those of us who love GA.

Shame, that.

Not trying to be political... Just lamenting the loss of liberties.

I know it's not common thought on here, but those "wealthy enough to own or lease a jet" are GA too and this whole scenario impacts that segment very harshly. The precedence here, whether a legitimate response to Massport giving GA space to the airlines or not, is a big take of GA rights across the board - G5's, Learjets, Cirruses, and 172's etal...

When I go visit my kith and kin in Boston, I don't fly any farther east than Minuteman, in Stowe Ma. (OK sometimes Lawrence (LWN), but transport is more limited)
My opinion: It's just not worth the aggravation to go any further into the Boston "Blue Zone".
Nice field, pick up a rental or they will give you a lift to public transportation.
A 38 minute drive to where I need to go.

What a coincidence,KBED is a massport airport. So you will be paying high fees in the suburbs. That and the airlines generate much more income for the port.

Even ones with "accountability" do whatever they wish (need I remind you of Mayor Daley and the midnight raid?). Not like the wrist-slap from the FAA did much to hold him accountable.

He's damned lucky I wasn't the one making the call. He'd still be in jail for attempted murder.

How can a public use airport get away with crap like this?

What you have to understand is that they are designed that way on purpose. The MTA and such institutions are designed specifically to insulate politicians from unpopular policy positions. And they do have accountability - to the politicians. Just not out in the open.

There are some pretty big hitters in the Boston business scene that are going to be a little ****ed about this.
