The pilot formerly known as Cool Beard Guy
Long time lurker, first time poster and new-ish PPL holder. Was planning on visiting my parents (and my first Bravo) this weekend but it turns out they have better things to do... so I have a plane and need a mission. I was thinking something in the north country given the current Wx outlook and partially inspired by this post https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/com...ces-to-fly-in-the-midwest.98061/#post-2186632

I usually only visit the north country in the summer when I race sailboats up there.

Currently thinking KDPA -> shoreline to KCVX (or FKS or MGN?) -> KMCD -> Pictured Rocks fly-by -> KSUE -> KOSH -> KDPA (probably via skyline)

Unsure where to put the overnight stop(s), probably minimum KCVX-ish - by sea this is one of my favorite areas. I'd like to tap the collective wisdom and criticism of PoA; anything I'm missing?

p.s. it's a rental and I was asked no grass landings... so that's 1/3 of the really cool places up there.

Great idea, just go where weather & any passengers leads you. I did the same just over a year ago, August. Not the best picture, but here’s ‘Pictured Rocks’. After L. MI, we went to CMX for some visiting.45944EF3-B7D7-47B2-A55E-F8E00CDB74B4.jpeg

It got cancelled due to Sunday Wx- was gunna be fri-Sunday for us. But I can reccomrnd if ur circling lake a great spot to camp if it were in warm weather is Woosley field just south of CVX, two huge grass runways that are nice... can park plane on side of runway n camp... no need to have a TW or bush tires... I think east west is 3500 ft and 0 obstructions either way really. The N/S is more typical grass strip 2400 I think w reasonable obstructions on either end.

I can vouch for Woolsey (5D5) as I landed my Cardinal RG there a few years back. Some things to note: the E/W runway slopes down to the west, and I would still get a recent pirep on the conditions as the surface can be rough. The time I was there, a Mooney had just had a prop strike while taxiing to parking.

Beaver Island is awesome and has motels n bed n breakfasts.. I think shortest route over is 20 miles over water...

North fox island is highly spoke of but that wud b camp only... completely uninhabited

Ouch that’s no bueno! We had hardly landed and had pack of coyotes wandering runway, seen deer n cranes. Definitely going back next summer... perfect spot for my old c140!

And if ya go get gas at Boyne city nearby they have courtesy cars and ya just write down ur info and they mail ya a bill for ur avgas fillup still... like living in Mayberry

Frankfort also has a courtesy car on lakeshore too...
