Why do I often get alerts for threads I have posted in, for a while. Then after a while, I start seeing the threads popping up with new posts but I don't get alerted? This happens quite often.

Depends on where and how you are getting the alert, but usually you are “subscribed” to the thread. There’s a setting somewhere to auto-subscribe to threads you post in or not.
You can also subscribe to whole categories and you’ll see alerts for anything new on that category.
