When I plan on skyvector this sample New Jersey flight { KMMU (Morristown) 12N (Aeroflex-Andover) 1N7 (Blairstown) N05 (Hackettstown) N51 (Solberg) KMMU }, I get different headings than when I make the same plan in Foreflight.

Skyvector: KMMU (324) 12N (272) 1N7 (157) N05 (171) N51 (058) KMMU

ForeFlight: KMMU (312) 12N (265) 1N7 (169) N05 (183) N51 (062) KMMU

Anyone have an idea of why this might be?

Tell ForeFlight you’re flying at some ridiculous altitude to turn off wind correction.

Garmin Pilot had (maybe still has) a bad bug along these lines. If you're sitting at home after a previous flight and working up a flight plan you notice the numbers can't be right. So I work it once on the Android and once on the iPad...different headinds

Turns out later, after a flight the tablet still thinks it should use FIS weather instead of the internet (which is available). So the winds data is bogus. Took a while to figure that one out.

Why do these things give heading? Don't make no sense unless your just gonna use it for planning and then use pilotage and/or dead reckoning, without electronic Nav, once your in the air. Whatcha gonna do if the Magenta Line/HSI/CDI says your off course(or track if thats what ya wanna call it)? Pick a heading that keeps you on course? Or fly the heading the gadget guessed might be the one that will keep you on course?

Many do use them for flight planning, and you can print a flight log at home, and then use the paper if the gadget croaks. If the waypoints are navaids you just keep on trucking. Tune Mr. VOR and carry on, for those who remember how. Haha. If they’re landmarks you may want an actual paper chart as a backup.

If yer usin Mr.VOR you'll still be flying the needle and using whatever heading works to stay on it regardless of what HDG the gadget came up with during planning. I can only see a reason to plug the winds guess into it and come up with a heading is if you are going do dead reckoning on the flight. I think they outta do away with that HDG thing in these things and use CRS(for course) or TRK.

So you’re saying we should all just follow the magenta line and trust it, and not know why the nose is pointed 20 degrees off of the Navaid today? ;)1

One if the things I like about some EFBs, including ForeFlight, is the ability to turn the flight plan and flight data off. Even more than 8 years paperless, I guess I'm just old school enough to want just a chart with a line drawn on it as a situational reference. An enhanced one which shows my position and is capable of more, but ultimately just a chart.

I like the ones where the flight log and plan are on a separate page and here’s the kicker...

They show the originally planned times and data and a delta between that and reality.

The ones that update all the times continuously are fine, but then you have no on screen indication that every leg is taking you longer than planned, or going faster.

Of course we track this ourselves with a silly little thing called a watch, but it’s dumb that on many EFBs the original plan times start changing as soon as you taxi and the original plan disappears.
