AOPA forums closing.....

You forgot:

I'm thinking of buying a plane and leasing it back to a flight school. I'm thinking I could come out ahead. Is this a good idea?

And "is it ok to lie on my medical?"

I have a password I only use on that forum. I've been getting those phishing/blackmail emails showing that password and then threatening to share your web watching with your address book unless you pay. I can categorically I don't watch online porn and just laughed it off.

I bet there are people who got sucked into that scam.

Anyways....

I was wondering what flight bag I should get?

Does anyone have a good idea about which headset is the best?

Lastly, what airplane should I buy?

Surely there should be some sort of consensus by now.
That last one is the most ridiculous of the bunch!

Any AOPA refugees in the area please advise ...
Great.

Now this place will be AOPA-ificated.

See below:

I stopped visiting the red board years ago. I looked just the other week out of curiosity and it was mostly dead. The new Hangar is just lame.

I stopped visiting years ago too. What a rotten atmosphere for a board comprised of aviation people, who you would think would have a lot of commonality. Instead of finding the commonality, it turned into an endless succession of ruler tests, one-upmanship, and general nastyness.

Oh, I misread the announcement as:

*** AOPA Forums Closure Notice *** Attention all forum users: During the 2019 “Hall Monitor’s” audit, it was determined that the “Hall Monitor” can no longer keep this forum safe from non-aviation related posting vulnerabilities. After considerable research and discussion, the “Hall Monitor” has determined that the AOPA Forums capabilities have been supplanted by other social media forums. As such, the “Hall Monitor” has decided, in the best interest of our member's non-aviation posting safety, to shutdown these user forums permanently on October 14, 2019. We hope that you will utilize other platforms to continue the conversations you care about. Please visit the other platforms to continue your online non-aviation and aviation related camaraderie.

The hangar site needs a little work. Hopefully they will progress to a better site.
They can upgrade the server it's running on to something that's still suppported (talk about security holes) and ditch the abortion of a collaboration system with something handy (like XenForo or vb5) and then it MIGHT be as good as what we had before.

Forums can’t be flown to golf vacations. Not surprised their leadership has little interest in maintaining the forum.

You really don’t expect AOPA leadership to pay for their own golf vacations. I mean like nothing supports GA like spending the members money taking N4GA for a golf vacation and then writing articles to complain about egregious ramp fees..

My AOPA membership expired about 2 weeks ago. Between the forums closing down and me not winning the Super Cub giveaway...I'm outta there!

Was AOPA forum ever even useful?
Yes. I "met" Dr. Bruce there many years ago when I had a semi-confusing SI issue. He was kind enough to offer to Skype with me, go ove4 my records, and assist me through it. It all went fine. For that alone, I found it extremely useful, although I haven't participated there in many years. Have kept my AOPA membership mostly active, meaning paid, but am increasingly unsure why.

I sort of enjoyed a “discussion” with some loon who was absolutely convinced and offered “evidence” that there was no crash of a “United airliner” in a Pennsylvania field on 9/11.

Other than that, no.

Cheers

AOPA is where POA was born from. Sometime around 2005ish, AOPA decided to shut down the 'red board' (or was it yellow back then?) and some folks got together and stood POA up as a refugee camp. Over the years, I (and I'm assuming several others) have never been back to AOPA - honestly, I didn't even know they had their boards active again.

The "evidence" is a huge crash site that was created by the government to convince us that a plane crash had occurred

Deja vu all over again! Isn't it one of AOPA's previous forum shutdowns the reason for PoA's existence?

Yep.

Yep. That's how I remember it. I thought they were already shut down circa 2005.

Well, the "yellow board" shut down in about March of 2005, a few weeks after PoA came into existence. A couple months later, they came back with the "red board" but a lot of us stayed here.

Geesh my log in here still works!

Holy crap it's Scott!

I was gonna say "there goes the neighborhood" but someone already beat me to it.

BTW, no political discussion allowed here anywhere any more. The Spin Zone is no more. Be careful, lest ye be banned!

Yeah, that shutdown is when it went from yellow to red, and pretty much all of us from the first days of PoA came from there.
