Flying to San Juan's from SoCal next month, first stop is Shelter Cove in Calif. looking for recommendations for Oregon stopover for a night or two? Thanks for any recommendations? Had some friends
mention Redmond Oregon, but not sure why they were recommending it.

Redmond is a nice airport, close to lodging and food, but nothing really special. What is your range going to be after leaving Shelter Cove, I don’t think they sell gas there. Shelter Cove heading to the San Juans, sounds like you like the Coastal experience. Newport, ONP is worth looking into. Spend a couple nights and you have a day to do stuff. Get a car and there are day trips with righteous views. There are things around Redmond also. Lava cones, caves, lava fields. It’s where the Apollo astronauts trained for moon walks.

Good beach or Astoria if it’s for a few nights.

You are starting on the coast and ending on the coast. Going to Redmond means you have the cross the Cascades. Twice. You are probably better off sticking with the coast/I5 corridor, unless the notorious Pacific weather forces you inland to the lee (dry) side of the Cascades.

Not clear what sort of things you like to do. You could go into Aurora State and visit the Vans Aircraft factory, Uber into Portland and check out some of the numerous microbreweries.

Or Mc Minnville and check out the Evergreen museum.

@Peter Anderson 's recommendation for Astoria is a really good one. It has an interesting history as a Victorian age port at the mouth of the Columbia, a nice maritime museum, the Flavel house, and a very picturesque setting for a town where you can find some seriously good seafood. Mrs. GRG55 and I have some very fond memories spending a few days exploring there.

Sunriver (S21), east of the Cascades and just 25 miles or so southwest of Redmond, is a worthy destination in its own right. Yeah, you'd have to cross the Cascades, but the view of Crater Lake makes it worthwhile. At that it's a much more direct route between SoCal and Puget Sound than following the coast.

There's also Hood River (4S2) on the south bank of the Columbia River in the spectacular Columbia Gorge. Hood River is Nirvana for windsurfers, and there's a wonderful museum (Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum) on the field.

Yeah. That’s a great museum. It would just be wrong to be in the neighborhood and not do the Gorge. While we’re talking east of the mountains there is Sisters, 6K5. Walking distance to town, art, brew pubs, fine dining, lodging, views, day trips to the mountains and the rivers.
