Does the new HDX certified system require a WAAS gps source to function for a VFR panel? Must that signal come from a GPS navigator or can it be from a ABS-B out GPS source like a Stratus ESG?

No it does not. The basic package includes a 2020-compliant GPS receiver/antenna.

Thx. I am considering the HDX for my Navion that has no GPS now. I have a Stratus ESG at my local avionics shop ready for installation but wondering if I should cancel that for now. I don’t want to waste money or close out possible upgrade options.

if your going to go HDX i would use the dynon solution. use the dynon transponder, adsb in box and the GPS2020 gps source. that is the setup i have in my RV-4 and it is great setup.

The Dynon transponder costs $2,200 (plus installation), and the wiring of it is insanely simple. Power, ground, rs232 pair from Skyview & 2 jumpers.
