POA Movie thread

Watched Dunkirk while waiting for the wx to clear on the way to Oshkosh. An OK movie, it was worth the watch but only just barely. Lots of Spitfire action.
And who knew that Spitfires had such fantastic glide performance! ;)

By the way, Darkest Hour, which dealt with events around the time of Dunkirk but from Churchill's perspective, was excellent!

Wife and I did not care for it, was about 2 hours too long.
I was just going to ask about this movie...

Not worth it? Is it more of a documentary type than a story?

I liked it, but QT movies are not for everyone.

Documentary? Maybe, if you consider Inglourious Basterds a documentary about Hitler's death.

It's set in Hollywood, 1969. A lot of "names" in the movie that were in the news at the time.

For some reason, I like watching actors play actors - DiCaprio is pretty good in his role as an actor trying not to become a has been. Pitt is his friend and stunt double. The movie is pretty much about the two of them, with the events of the time (the Tate murder) as part of the storyline.

I feel like I’d like it, but I’m not sure if I’d like it enough to pay 12.95 + tax.

Trailer looks good... may just go see it this weekend.

Thx.

By all means, do. I don't want to scare you off. We just found it to be a bit long.

I was flipping through channels the other night and happened upon the the final race of Grand Prix on the oldies station which caught my attention[*]. It seems like a fascinating movie. Is the rest of it any good? Is it worth streaming it from somewhere and/or capturing on the DVR?

[*] The main reason it caught my attention is because I knew someone named "Sarti" in middle school and hearing the announcer excitedly call out Sarti's comeback fight was fascinating.

Not a movie, but still a pretty good hour:

I've been a Dave Chappelle fan for a long time, his old show was genius in a lot of ways. Not for everyone's taste, definitely, but the guy has talent.

One of his stand-up acts is on Netflix now, about an hour long, and very, very NSFW. He covers everything from school shootings, to alphabet people, to Ohio heroin addicts. But he does stop long enough to point out to the audience where the real problem with America is. If you can get past the blunt language, there's a lot of good commentary on social issues of the day. And he doesn't spare making fun of himself either.

We watched a quiet movie last night, "Leave No Trace". It's an indy, but with a reasonable budget, good writing, and good acting. Sure, there's the cliche of the guy with PTSD, but his way of coping is to live off the grid with his daughter. It's kind of a story of how nothing lasts forever, and how the two characters have to deal with that.

Takes place in the Pacific northwest, so the scenery is beautiful.

Sounds like Hanna, which I liked. Thanks for the heads-up.

My wife and I saw Gemini last weekend. It was... OK. Not fantastic, but not bad. If you like shoot-em-ups without a high school level of explosions, you might like it.

I liked Hannah, too. This is NOT that movie, even though it's a dad/daughter living in the woods. It touches on mental illness, homelessness, and a few other dynamics of what a family feels is best for them vs what society thinks is best for them.

Directed by the same person who directed "Winter's Bone". She also wrote the screenplay for both movies. One of the actresses in this movie, Dale Dickey, is in both those movies. She was also in Hell or High Water with Ben Foster who's the main character in this movie.

And what did you think?

That's the kind of thing I think my son would really, really like, based on the previews.

We enjoyed it. Where else can you see Dr. Strange and Spiderman without watching an Avengers movie ;)

Current War was an interesting movie. Fair warning, I nave been directly and indirectly involved in the electrical field since about 6 years old. My dad worked for Westinghouse, and previously at Crosley Radio Company in the commercial transmitter department. I worked for 40 years at a major utility, testing and maintaining power equipment, and was the leading expert on the antique equipment when I retired, not just because I was old, but I understood how they worked. I also knew the history in general, of the competition between the two technologies, so the movie made sense in terms of the central battle.

As in all that comes to the movie screen, there is exaggeration, but the movie is based on facts that did run in the manner depicted. It is the story of two very strong willed and intelligent men, each trying to be the most powerful man in the electric utility business, and there is actually only one really winning technology. The future of electricity was going to be efficient and good quality, or not.

The undercurrent of politics and financial intrigue are areas that I was unfamiliar with , and seemed believable as depicted in the movie. The family issues play push and pull, and will make the movie tolerable to many women, my wife did like the movie, but not to an exciting degree. I talked to a woman who sat behind us, and she thought it was OK, but not much more to be said. She went to the movie because her Dad worked for GE, and was interested in what kind of man Edison was, and found that portion informative. I had respect for both men before the movie, and that respect is undimmed.

The Chief Engineer of Potomac Electric Power Company, in Washington DC was an advocate of Edison Electricity. That was the company I retired from after 40 years service, so the technology and their evolution was built into the company.

I enjoyed the movie very much, and recommend it highly to engineering types in general, and electrical in particular.

There are no airplanes in the movie, as it essentially ends in 1893.

Saw it this evening. Same impression. Nothing special but the action does flow pretty consistently and storyline is pretty straight forward. They probably could have done a lot better with character development and backstory to get the audience to really engage with them. Shooter was a much better movie for depicting a sniper who had his own government turn on him, in general.

Found another Netflix movie tonight:

"I am Mother"

A pretty good sci-fi movie - post apocalypse, human extinction, but with a hopeful ending.

Dec 20....Star Wars 9
Now playing....Knives Out.

Knives Out is fun. No moral significance or message to convey, just pure entertainment. If you like who-done-its, worth the time. Well acted and it seems as though the actors are enjoying themselves. Seeing James Bond with a southern draw and Captain America as a less than virtuous character took a moment to sink in but does fit.

Slightly off topic... Any movies you've ever walked out of? Halfway through it (if that much) you said "This movie sucks!" and walked out?

I can think of three I've walked out of: Natural Born Killers, Magnolia, and The Thin Red Line. Grabbed my bag of popcorn and walked out.
Leaving Lost Vegas. Guy is trying to drink himself to death, and I guess he finally succeeds, but I walked out about 25% into it.

The Big Short

Not sure how I missed it until now. Margot Robbie in a bathtub and Led Zeppelin's version of "When the Levee Breaks" over the closing credits.

It's about the mortgage collapse in 2007 that started the crash in 2008. It's a very interesting story, and it breaks the 4th wall quite a few times to make sure you are caught up on what's going on. I liked it.

I enjoyed it and have it on BD. Reminds me a bit of Too Big to Fail. Another good movie.

What’s interesting is, the guy that Christian Bale plays is currently investing heavily into farmland and fresh drinking water companies. Kinda makes ya wonder what his forecast is for that.

Just finished watching a nice documentary:

“I Am Big Bird”

It’s about Caroll Spinney, the actor who is Big Bird. Interesting story of his background and how he and the character grew up.

Fate is the Hunter is on right now - Classic Earnest Gann

Fathom, 1967

Raquel Welch in the backseat of a 172 that's in a dogfight with a Cherokee.

Spoiler alert: she pushes both bad guys out and flies away safely.

Not sure how I missed this gem.

1917

Decent, not great. Seems the critics liked it a lot better than me. Liked "They Shall Not Grow Old" much more.

Watched Ad Astra last week. I’m glad I rented it from Red Box and didn’t pay any more than that. How the hell can you make a space movie that is this bad??? I mean, seriously. Lost count of how many ways it sucked. But only one part was bad. It was the middle. You know, the part between when you press “play” and the part when you put the DVD back in the case.

We have a 10 year old golden retriever (our third over the past 40 years) and streamed "The Art of Racing in the Rain" last night. There's lots of emotion... sadness and drama, but it has a happy ending. I was tearing up almost continuously throughout the movie, but at the risk of sounding like a masochist I'd recommend it to anyone who loves auto racing, dogs, or both.

I gave my dog an extra long hug after the movie ended.

Watched it on an Emirates flight to Dubai last month, also have a golden (Hank - 14yrs young this year) and was also tearing up at it (I don’t get emotional at any movie, but this one somehow got to me).

"Dolemite Is My Name" (Netflix)

It's NSFW, and it's a whole lot of fun.

Saw Just Mercy at the actual honest to goodness theater tonight. Better than I expected, though all the white people seemed more than a little one-dimensional.

Went to watch Kholop in a theater with wife. It was pretty good, if not spectacular. Decent comedy. The focus of the social satire is perhaps not easy to empathize with. The target audience of this movie was mad enough to march in protest with blue buckets on their heads, so you can imagine the anger that these abuses prompt. No wonder that it set all-time gross records. But in the U.S. the theater was very much empty. Which is too bad, I think it's worth seeing even just to get something slightly different. The female counterpart was somewhat cute.

Actually, one way or the other I was consuming some of this production of "new" Russian cinema. I even watched the remake of The Crew, which supposedly marked the rise of all this. It was mediocre, to tell you the truth. I can see why it's celebrated as a yardstick movie, but whatever. But Attraction was quite good, as far as movies go. Russians have finally made a Hollywood blockbuster that's better than most Hollywood blockbusters. Unfortunately, the central conflict is pure Putin's propaganda, so it's not as interesting as it could be, plot-wise. But I'd still take it over most of the typical fare they show on trans-Pacific flights.
