Weather OSH last night?

Target has a run on tents lol. Our mass arrival (Cherokee 2OSH) was the only mass arrivals that made it in before they closed grass parking. The Bo’s canceled all together. This is how it looks this morning.

I'll be back at RYV at 10 with more beer and cold water. Open Thangar #9 with a Skywagon in it. All are welcome.

Mooney mass arrival is on the ground and they are all taxiing to the end of 27 or possibly the north side of the North 40. The rest of the grounds are open to “tundra tire” aircraft. Still pretty swampy.....

OMG I thought the airshow announcers were bad until I heard the Mooney mass arrival speil. Why do they have an announcer anyway? Seems silly

For those trying to get into Camp Scholler today, grass seems like it’s drying out a bit but access roads are still torn up and largely impassable. They have traffic redirected on Poberezny Road, folks camping in the right lane as far as I can see.

Scholler looks like a swamp.
The word is that Scholler is closed to new arrivals! They're not allowing any RVs in due to the mud. RVs are being sent to parking at the old shopping center or paved parking lots.

If that had been in place when I arrived I would have had to tell the Winnebago County cops to stop by to remove my desicated corpse.

I booked the honey wagon to drain my tanks. EAA won't let them circulate the truck off paved roads until the dirt roads dry, which may be in several days. I'll be ankle deep in gray water by then.

The creek is down to resonable levels.

Hey the flying WX is CAVU today, Sunday, if they're open for arrivals.

EAA would be smart to make the call and announce it ASAP. Uncertainty isn't good for attendance - flying or driving. I have friends who are in a 4 wheel RV. They have been directed to overnight at Wal-mart.
I was wondering how they handled heavy coaches like ours? I am very hesitant to take ours off hard surface. 30,000# isn't what I want in the mud.

Yup Scholler is still closed to new arrivals. We were sent to the old shopping center car park. There is at least 100 RVs here. They have started letting tent campers in but no RVs or Travel Trailers yet. I’m dreading the rush when they finally open again.

Since my first Oshkosh in 1985 I've noticed the size and luxury of the motorized RVs that show up there has increased steadily. Some pretty massive rigs on the grounds in recent years. If its dry, no problem on the grass. If not dry, there is.

I was up at Vintage by Tall Pines. Very squishy, they don’t even want the scooters on the grass. They put netting down where taxiway goes on to the grass, but it’s still wet past the netting. We cleared out a drain there and drained one pond.

Sun is out and things are drying, but the two derechos that came by in less than 24 hours dumped about 2 inches of rain.

Have you been through Scholler? We are trying to find out if we can get in today. I struggle to believe at this point they can’t let anybody in.

I just came past the main Scholler entrance about 5 minutes ago. Doesn’t look like anything is moving. Pop up is still popped up in front of registration buiding.

I actually just got hold of someone at EAA in camp and they said it’s unlikely that any campers will be allowed in today and tomorrow is 50/50.

Honest. It’s really, really wet and RVs are lined on all the access roads. Everyone, including the volunteers, wish it was perfect, but there was a lot of water and there now some monumental ruts. One of the Vintage guys got stuck in his 4x4.

If you are tenting you can get into Scholer. You have to park along the road somewhere, walk in to pay for and get you camping credentials and then you can drive in the normal entrance/exit road to the campground. We got in at 1am last night, and were allowed to drive in with a tent around 7:30am. The campgrounds are soggy so I get why rvs can’t get in but it seems solid enough that a 4wd truck towing a pop up trailer wouldn’t have any issues at all. Same for arrivals. Lots of dry spots with some soggy areas mixed in. Not sure why they can’t get at least some people in and parked in the dry areas.

Because when that many Mooneys are landing, there’s a good chance somebody’s going to prang something. :)

Good sun & wind drying it out.... but no more arrivals for camping it looks like:

So they are passing out free 100LL and everyone is running their engines like giant blow dryers? Or they really aren't doing all they can? ;)

Helos are circulating, blowin the grass dry.

Hey, also - its not like it is all under water.
We’ve seen plenty of high ground that is already dry; we are sitting in the grass right now, portions will be dry soon, others later, some not til after the show.

Anyone been down around vintage? Website says it’s going to remain open, but that it’s currently closed, lol.

Vintage is very swampy. The upper parking area near the street isn’t bad but the flight line parking has standing water.

This is begging for a punchline.

True.
I’m in a Cherokee Six. As luck would have it, I just snagged a hotel room right before this came out. Ugh.

Listening to Fisk on LiveATC, I hear em letting twins in.

Guess it's a moot point now....

From OSHALERT:

GA camping and parking is full unless you have reserved parking.

Yup. That lasted 2 hours until they filled up what areas they felt could handle it. Hoping for more tomorrow.

They have an army of pumping trucks, tractors, and graders.

It hit me that most of the muddy paths are where they burned out the grass to define the lanes.

I saw some John Deere mowers in Scholler on Thursday so I guess they keep grooming until the field has a vehicle on it.

There is still a lot of room left in the south 40. It’s dried out pretty well over here but the taxi over here may still be a bit muddy.
