Huh?

I thought this was a manhole cover???

Because California has nothing better to work on.

I'm with SkyDog. It is rather silly, but if the voters of the town are OK with it, who cares?
Because stupid is stupid no matter how many people vote for it.

Wait until they realize that person-hole covers were designed by men, decide the shape is too male-centric, and decide they should be triangular to better represent the diverse community in which the person-holes exist.

How about we let the people who open the fackin things for a living call them whatever they want and the people who walk past them everyday on the way to their worthless degree can STFU!

I don't really care about the matter. What I care about is people complaining about something stupid and people not telling them they're stupid. That's all I want to happen, I want people to know and understand they're stupid.

I feel like Southern California is not representative of Northern California.

Well, seeing as City of Los Angeles banned the Master/Slave terms regarding computer equipment in the early 2000s, I don't think those two halves are that far apart.

The bigger divide is the coastal parts vs the rest of the state.

That's a stupid goal!

@Stingray Don nailed. Odd part.. Friend of mine was asked that in a job interview for a non-engineering job. He said he didn't know. They asked him to guess. (they were doing the thinking outside the box thing). He told me they asked him this goofy question. I told him the correct answer. He's like, how do you know that? I'm like, because I do?

So they won’t drop through no matter how it is oriented

This. I know of one other shape that will not drop through. It's the rounded triangular shape that the Wankel engine "piston" uses.

I think a regular triangular shape can fall through.

Are there any others?

No, triangles can’t. Simple geometry.

No equilateral triangle can fall through no matter the angle.

Who would make it not equilateral? Lol who would make it a triangle? Lol

All triangles, including isosceles?
The more I think about it, the more I realize he's right... if we include a tether. But then we open the door to all kinds of shapes, including random shapes made with crayon.

No tether. A equilateral triangle lid can’t fall through. Try it.

The corners can never be further apart than they are when the lid is properly fit. The point could be down, but the lid can’t fall through.

And rotate it point-out, a leg against the midpoint of a leg of the frame, and all of a sudden the triangle has a shorter dimension.

Nope.
