Yup, first post. I’ll keep it simple. I’m purchasing a Mooney M20F from Monroe GA. I need to fly back to Austin TX. I do have my commercial rotor wing, but I need to log the hours for the fixed wing ad on. I’ll pay for the CFI flight to Atlanta and we’ll travel from Monroe to Austin. Simple as that. Also, be awesome if they live in the surrounding area of Austin that way I can hire them for my commercial training as well. Of course I’ll pay the CFI for the ferry flight. Thanks!

I'm betting you will get a lot of replies. It will be an adventure. Did a similar flight with a student who purchased a C182 in Seattle and we flew it back to Maine.

Congrats on the "new" Mooney. F model is a good complex starter. Put some 201 mods on it and it flies a lot faster.

How close did you get to North Dakota?

Where in Austin are you going to put the plane? Have you asked around there? Put a notice on bulletin boards there? Anyway, have fun.

Most likely San Marcos or Austin Executive Airport. Whichever doesn’t have tie-down fees! HAha! Berry aviation said they would allow me to keep in their corporate hangar, it’s a little speedy though.

The 201 mods are super nice, would love to do the Rajay turbo STC. First thing is (nothing to do with speed) is figure out an avionics setup.

Had a F with the 201 windshield and intake cowl, I liked the Mooney, but I would get leg cramps after about two hours. Always had to take shorter flight to take a break.

6”. That 201 windshield mod, takes out the access panel to your avionics. Not really siked on that one. I’m an A/P as well, closing up panels that make my life easier...nah. Hahahahaha!

Until you start chasing water leaks. Ask me how I know.... A conversion to the 201 windshield solved that problem real quick.

Try posting over on mooneyspace.com as well. Lot's of TX folks over on that board so you might have a little better success finding what you need.

Good luck, loved my time in the Mooney.

Cheers,
Brian

Whilst trying to buy a Mooney I became convinced that, despite their impressive speed most never made it out of Texas. Should be a number of Mooney proficient CFI's in Austin. If not, I know a guy at PDK. Second the Mooneyspace thought. You'll probably have lots of responses.

I would call Josh Flowers, aka Aviation101 on YouTube. He is based at San Marcos. Mail@aviation101.com

He did this very thing not long ago for another Mooney, including helping the new owner gain the required time the insurance company wanted.

How tall are you?

6 foot tall.

Another item for the F model is the gear retraction motor/lead screw assembly. As I recall it requires inspection of the motor worm gear, pinion gear every 200 hours. While on the landing gear subject, part of EVERY annual is going through the gear adjustment sequence. I think it was 12 steps. Always start at #1, replace any worn bushings and work any slack to the end. If the procedure is followed you won't have a landing gear fold on the ground. Mooney's lead the "Gear Collapse" accident/incident category, just about all traced back to improper adjustments.

Thanks, I emailed him. He “cooled guyed me” no response.

Okay, I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for the response.

Will do! Mooneyspace it is! Thanks.

When are you planning on doing it? I live in the Atlanta area, but couldn’t do it until next month. @Lance F might be able to help you out. He lives closer to Monroe and used to own a Mooney.

Try Facebook... he is active in many groups including North Texas Aviators.

I'll also PM you info on a Fort Worth based ferry pilot that might be available

If you wind up passing through DFW, let us know so we can enjoy some more Fire Ant Funeral together.

I live an hour from Austin, but I haven't flown a Mooney in 30+ years. I'm sure insurance requirements run the show in that regard...

Insurance requirements are usually 5-25 hours in type for Mooneys. Definitely find someone with experience. Check out an issue of https://themooneyflyer.com/, there usually is a list of Mooney specific CFIs in every issue.

I was going to say @Lance F also. Still flies that Mooney even though he doesn't own it any more.

I know that Mooney. It lives in the same hangar as a training 172 I instruct in. OP can pm me if he’s interested in a pilot from the Atlanta end.
