C182 TruTrak auto pilot

Hi Just about finished a Trutrak install in a C182P and working with the engineers who have hit an issue today. There is already a G5 AI and GTN650 with ver 6.50 in the plane. The G5 requires the GTN ARINC 429 out to be set to Data=GARMIN 429 for s/w ver 6.50+ in order for it to to display the GTN VNAV function (which is nice).
However the TruTrak wants GAMA 1 and won't work with GARMIN 429.We tried using the GTN ARINC429 channel 2 -the next-door pin-outs but the config page greys out GAMA -apparently you can't have two channels with GAMA.
It's starting to look like I'm forced to go backwards to no VNAV on the G5 in order to get the TruTrak to follow the GPS. Disappointing!
We'll look again tomorrow at the Garmin install manuals but assume someone has already hit this problem?

Wondering if it has anything to do with Trutrak announcing the Vizion will work with the G5 (OSH announcement)

Splice two wires to the single GAMA output?

We considered that but Channel 1 is not set as a GAMA output any longer ever since the GTN got past ver 6.50. In order for the VNAV feature to display on the G5, Garmin changed the required protocol to 'GARMIN 429'. This is a Garmin propriety protocol .. sound familiar? TruTrak doesn't like it - it wants GAMA 1!

There are two channels on the GTN but we can't use the second configured with GAMA because the GTN considers GARMIN 429 a GAMA 'lookalike' and won't allow GAMA on both channels at the same time. It greys out on the config screen. We could revert channel 1 to GAMA1 but that will mean losing all VNAV and other new GTN features off the G5. (which is still better than no autopilot but ..)

As Unit74 was saying maybe when the Trutrak starts working with the G5 it will be possible to get a signal from the G5 to the TT, not from the GTN, and keep the G5 happy displaying all the smart stuff. But not sure if the FAA would like that config?

Talking to TT about this and hopefully there's a fix. If not, its a big issue of anyone with a GTN650 /G5 combo who is considering a TT install. I'm guessing there'd be a few?

Just finally got my personal 1956 182 in the air with the TruTrak. It’s working perfectly with stock settings. What a great upgrade!

Hi Jesse,

I have a 1980 182Q that my partner and I are planning a TruTrak install this winter. I'm curious, what did you do for mounting the CWS button on the yoke? Also any other comments you have about the TT in a 182 are welcome!

Thanks,
George

I usually use a plate or a piece of aluminum angle and screw it to the yoke and mount the button to that. In my 182 I extended the plate that held the PTT button and put the CWS button there.
