I've been studying for my ifr check ride for about 10 months and I'm about ready to go nuts. It seems like no matter what I do I keep coming across items that I feel I should know better. I go through the pts and feel like I got this, then see a video that makes me think I'm an idiot. Hopefully I'm not alone and other people have/had this feeling too. I guess I'm just getting nervous.

It’s time to relax, don’t overthink it.

My friend just passed his IFR checkride. There were a lot of questions and he felt like he should know things better. But he passed.
I was super nervous for my IFR checkride in 1995. I really enjoyed Sportys IFR videos.
On the plus side, the DE will give you credit for the things that you do right on the check ride. From what I remember, you only need to repeat the things that you did not get right when you do a retake (if you need one).

I passed on the first try, despite the nerves. The oral took a while, but the flying part seemed very straight forward.

Good luck on your check ride! If your instructor says it's time, then its time for the check ride!

Not only are you "not alone" but this is veryveryvery common!
Just get past the checkride.
Later, you will continue your learning and have a chance to knock out all those things that are concerning you.

What examiner are you using? PM me if you prefer. I might know who they are and be able to offer some insight.

Just remember, as ApacheBob said... you DO get partial credit for all you get right.

WORST CASE, is you have to schedule a revisit. But, I doubt it.

Now, relax, get some rest, and show him what you DO know. I'm certain you know well enough!!!

Have you done a mock checkride? 10 months is a lot of time to prep especially if your CFI thought you were ready 10 months ago.

No i haven't done a mock rode yet. Long story short I actually started in 1991 but ran out of money. I restarted last August and my cfi passed away in October. I just found another CFII about a month and a half ago and have only been able to fly once a week. (If that). But I've been trying to study the whole time to keep up on it so I feel over prepared but I know there will be something I screw up. Thanks to everyone.

I've been studying for it for over a year (long story), and it's just like with my PPL ride: some days I'm Chuck Yeager, some days I wonder how anyone ever issued me a certificate. Totally normal, brother. Someone else said it well: if your instructor says you're ready, you're ready. Just do your best.

You and I are somewhat in the same boat. I started the IR in earnest last spring, then my instructor up and quit about a month before I was ready (gibe or take), then my next instructor had a heart attack. Now I'm in... a holding pattern.

As I'm sure you know. Don't give up! I never thought finding an instructor would be this hard. But I know it will come together. It just takes hard work and dedication. Good luck on your search for your next cfi.

Quit watching videos. No snark. No punchline. Quit

I'm not sure I saw the answer here. When's your checkride?

I don't have a date set yet but my instructor says I'm ready and I have a DPE willing to try and work me in before July 4th.

Hopefully the studying includes some flying. Recent flying experience I think is key to that checkride. I was fortunate that I was able to go
Up the day before with my CFI and he really put me through the ringer. Situation was weather 1/2 vis 200 OVC took off with hood and peeking at two lines on runway. At about 1000 AGL gave me smoke in cockpit- what do you do..ran me through the ringer. Did two of the three approaches that I would go on to do. Distracted me a lot. Silly key was he wanted me to remember to pull that checklist out and read it out loud, state “cruise checklist complete”.
Which I still do even if alone in plane now. Post ppl I didn’t really do that.

Update ---> My check ride is scheduled for July 11th. I guess that makes me feel better because I see the end coming. It's strange, I all of a sudden don't even feel nervous about it. I just keep thinking, I know what I'm doing and I know what I'm talking about. I was originally worried about the oral but not any more. I just keep thinking that even if I fail, the next ride won't be as demanding.

I have a lesson this Thursday and probably another before the big ride. I feel the confidence building.

Thanks for all of the encouragement!!!

You'll do awesome. I know it - your instructor knows it. Just show the examiner.

FYI - he's not WANTING to fail you, either. He's motivated to check the green box.

It may or may not help, but here's a little something I wrote on my website called "Checkride Jitters."

https://www.ryanfergusonDPE.com/checkride-jitters/

Good luck!
Thanks for the info. That's a great piece.

Now the bad news. Going through the paperwork making sure everything was ready, I realized that the annual is due before my scheduled check ride. Of course the mechanic is busy and can't get done in time so once again, things are getting pushed back. After a while you just have to laugh. If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. The worst part is that this one is my fault. I should have known it was getting close but I've been busy studying.

Beats showing up for the check ride and THEN finding out your plane is out of annual. :) Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do fine when the time comes.

Week of my 1st instrument checkride- broke my leg
2nd-weather bad
3rd-weather great, hour before I’m leaving DPE calls and cancels due to a death in family
3rd-weather bad
4th-weather bad
5th- great day I fly out. Forgot my pilots license
6th bad weather
7th-good day went up and passed it.

During that time had a 6K annual that took a month, f’ed around with a fuel leak that ended in replacing the bladder.

I look back and laugh at it too. I always thought passing that ride was going to be a celebration. But ended Passing was a relief-like pulling out a splinter.
