I’m in the market for a 182 and some have the O-470-U while most have the -L or -R.

The TBO on the U is listed as 2000 hours but in reality does the U typically go any further between overhauls than its predecessors who have a 1500 hour TBO?

Thx

If the engine is healthy, probably will go way past 2000 hrs. The oil analysis trend, filter inspections, and engine IRANs in the log will give good indication on the engine's health. Plus, is it being flown regularly and correctly? Too many engines get euthanized because of the OWT TBO.

Low engine times and high engine times effect sale price, but have no bearing (punny) towards engine health.

Post what you find in here so you'll get as many opinions as possible with little consensus. :):):)

Search Mike Busch TBO to get a scientific-er opinion on the theoretical TBO.

Bottom ends rarely give problems on aircraft engines that run regularly. You are more likely to need a top end rebuild than anything else. the U model turns lower rpms so that should help but it's more about temperature control and frequent use.

Agreed but as someone with a motor at ‘TBO’ I’d still like the higher figure from the mfg since that’s relied so heavily by buyers.

So with all else equal (calendar time since last major, frequent use, proper mixture controls, etc) is an 1100 hour -U worth more than an 1100 hour -L or -R?

More important then the TBO is to note that the U egnine cannot run mogas while the earlier ones can.

That high in the hour range no, not really. It may mean something to a commercial operator that but the general public wouldn’t value it different.

Best engine they ever installed in a 180 and 182. Lots of power..............very little noise.
