With the gtn 650, a generous IA who was learning and hence didn’t charge the whole time and the club people helping with the install .... 44k approx

Sounds a little on the high side, but not outrageous.

General question: The install cost is a significant part of putting in a GTN navigator. I assume the install cost for a 650 is pretty well identical to a 750, in any specific airplane.

Why is it I seem to see so many more 650 installations than 750s, even when panel space isn't an issue? Wouldn't the benefits of the larger screen seem compelling? Is the price difference between the two boxes that big a deterrent?

An extra $5k down the hole doesn't make a lot of sense when the extra features of the 7xx series probably wont be used anyway. One of those extra features requires an additional database subscription I believe, (flight charts) adding even more cost. Don't forget when the unit needs repair by Garmin it will cost more than the 6xx series also. A lot of these airplanes are sub $50k value as it is, an extra $5k for bigger screen & higher overall cost of ownership doesn't make sense IMHO.

I agree, especially when the 10” Skyview screen costs less than $5,000.

slippery slope. I could make the same argument for the 650 expense. "My splurge is your need, my welfare is your entitlement". Round and round we go. Look at the panel-ADSB-IN mouthfoamers. Anything less than a 345 or 375 for 2020 is blasphemy.

I searched POA for 'skybeacon' and this is what came back....

Man I can't fathom dropping 44k to fly the same approaches you could with 430W and a nav/com w/ CDI... To each their own, if I was building a new airplane I would probably splurge but could never justify dropping that kind of cash on an old 172.

It’s noy just flying the approaches. It the whole flying experience and situational awareness. This new stuff is a game changer.

I've got about 4 hours behind these now. If it is very turbulent, its hard to see the finer details but I really like them.

Your iPad is not a legal, dependable stc’ed Install. Ever let it get hot, and it’s no good at all when it shuts off.

My ipad gives me the same for a lot less.

But you can't legally fly an iPad IFR. The new panel stuff is a safety boon for single-pilot IFR flight. We've come a long way, baby, in 30 years of IFR flying (in a flib). It's hard now to justify not replacing failing vacuum instruments with G5s or equivalent. There is no way I'd trade my current IFR panel for the one I trained with 30 years ago. ADF, anyone?

I get the point. Grum.man means he can meet ifr requirements with cheaper hardware and at the same time have the same SA with all the bells and whistles with a cheap ipad. It meets mission requirements.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still tempted about going G3X, but truth be told, I can have pretty much the same with my ipad and Garmin Pilot and still be legal in IFR . Money is the issue here. The club raised the money easily between at least 50 pockets, that's not my case.
Most of us would take the over-kill update route if money was not a concern.

I am driven by weight loss, this man in the video said the took out about 35 pounds in weight. I am assuming that means gauges, wires, adfs, panel plastic, etc. I personally need every pound out of my plane, and I'm not getting thinner (nor single either).

Can you do an IFR LPV approach with a Skyview screen?

I thought it just replaced the 6-pack.

LPV, LNAV/LP + V, Loc, VOR, ILS. Yes, it will fly all of these. It’s WAY more than just a 6-pack.

Then why would anybody bother with the expense to install a GTN-650 (or any other WAAS capable GPS navigator) as in post #1?

Because it needs to have a data source for those approaches.

The panel actually looked somewhat svelte in the "before" picture. I only counted 5 boxes in the stack: a GMA340 audio panel, MX20 MFD, SL30 NAV/COM, GNC300XL GPS and GTX327 transponder.
