I know we've discussed the "joys" of Facebook

I like it for the most part. Catching up with my sister and nephew happening several states away, knowing the horrors of my friends, joys of my friends, some local ish news (United flight from Mexico had to land in Toledo due to storms and low fuel... Funny part is the crew timed out so they had to get another crew to fly the people to Cleveland - 2 hours away by car) I belong to some fun groups too.

My rant? Parents asking advice. Seriously?

Friend posted inquiring if the kids should get hiking shoes since they're going to national parks and well hiking. Ok depends on so much. Too vague. Gaaaaaaaah
 
FB is what you make of it,, you want to deal with all the crazy's you can try.
 
I get on to check my neighborhood group, then get off. Every once in a while I look at my feed, and mostly I see my old high school classmates, some of whom look quite good, and some of whom look way older than they are.

Then I get off. I have no interest in providing a revenue stream to Zuckerberg, Sandberg, and company.

Have had no problems with Facebook, but then, I'm not on an idiotic drive to "friend" as many people as possible. If someone on my friend list does post too many political rants, I quietly take them off the "follow" list. Since I only rarely post political stuff myself, I don't get a crap-ton of flamular feedback.

FB is a good host for specific interests. On FB^2 (The Fly Baby Facebook page) there are several builders posting great shots of their aircraft, and the "RFC Airmen" group posts a big selection of WWI airplane photos.

Last election cycle I posted a message of thanks to those who did not clutter up my facebook feed with political posts. That was back when I was actively posting. So far this year I've made three posts.
 
Getting to be more political posts. I don’t know why people think they know my political affiliations. Any article of interest is so full of ads, it’s not worth reading.
 
My wife uses FB to keep up with her family. They are spread out pretty far so it is really nice for her to be able to share pictures.

FB is a terrible place to discuss anything- airplanes, cars, health, parenting, politics, etc etc in any meaningful depth yet that’s where everyone is and that’s sadly where the groups/discussions are going.

She uses Facebook because all the family can look at the pictures she post, and she can see theirs, instead of emailing a picture to each family member. And since none of her family members live in this country, phone calls can come at undesirable hours.... She has a big family, so Facebook works for them, email takes too much time.

I don't want a Facebook account (or email address and phone) but I have to have one for business. I am really happy to be down to one cell phone now.. :lol::lol:

That’s a nice justification for having a social media account. You can send emails with multiple addresses, and text multiple people at the same time, too. I have a large family, too. Dozens o’ cousins, etc. Big difference for me, though, is that I don’t need to see what everyone is doing every 4 minutes, nor do I care to tell everyone my daily activities, mood, or what I ate for lunch. Anyone important enough to know that stuff already knows. ;)
 
I have been racing a group there that has become a virtual knock-down, drag-out between some folks that are very pro-Union and some that are very anti-Union. And nether side is giving one inch.
 
I mostly use FB to find out what timezone my parents are in. They are retired and probably spend about eight to nine months total in a year traveling to see friends and family.

Much easier than trying remember or track where they are now.

I don't know....don't see much difference between Hangar Talk and FB.

* I see as many food pictures here as fb. The food looks better here though.
* Not as many arguments around here since SZ was dissolved. That's one + for Hangar Talk.
* I can say things here that I wouldn't say on fb since that's one more way I keep track of my dad, wife and other relatives.

With that said, I wouldn't say ANYTHING anywhere online that could jeopardize my job, etc. I'm amazed at how many people throw their lives out the door doing stupid things like that.
 
I used to be super anti-Facebook and refused to make an account. Until that is, someone made one for me, populating it with less than glamorous photos of drunken party events. Then I became even more anti-Facebook, and even threatened legal action against Facebook in an attempt to take the account down. And they did, eventually.

I then decided it was probably a good idea to go ahead and create an account, for the sole reason of eliminating the ability of someone else faking another account. I don't use it much. Sometimes I put in gratuitous shots of dinner, you know, meaningless non-important stuff. I don't get in to the political posts, I just tune them out.

The upside is I've been able connect with some people in my past, like classmates, that I never thought I'd hear from for the rest of my life. It has a place, and it's up to the individuals to decide if they want to use it constructively, or destructively to themselves.

I have learned to "hide" all political posts. Now, I have done it enough I pretty much never get any political or news items in my feed; regardless of the source.

That certainly would improve the signal to noise ratio, but I just don't use Facebook enough for it to be worth the effort. It's not that political posts offend me, they just block more relevant items.

Correct, I am interested in family/friends what is going on. I was surprised at how quickly it worked. I only scroll down a page or two each time I visit which is every few days. It takes about ten seconds per story to hide it.

I post very little on FB. Didn’t really want to join it at all.
“So, who forced you to?” I hear you asking.

Nobody. Everybody.

I actually joined FB solely because I am a part time musician in a band. We had created a website (www.steamcircusband.com) with contact info, song lists, videos, band bio, etc. to use to help get gigs.

The thing is, turned out venues, bars, pubs, almost always have their main presence on FB, expect bands to have a presence, and either prefer or force contact for gigs using messenger in FB.

I have worked with computers, Unix, windows, since the late eighties, and really hate the wishy washy, unspecified interface in Facebook. In real applications you know the effect of a setting...

Anyway, I think FB Is a very clumsy interface. Oh well.

So later, since I’m on FB, my family and friends friend me which is fine. It is a little useful there. That part of it is actually ok.

Also when I started flying, although the flying club does have a web page, www page, they also have FB and honestly it seems more vital and pertinent info is posted in FB than on their web page.

Our kids, who have children, seem to be forced also onto FB, by the schools and extra curricular activity folk. They all use FB to send out information, logistics, discussions, etc. they could opt out, say they don’t have FB but would miss out on information. I notice a lot of this.

It seems like in society today, it is expected you have a FB account. You aren’t forced, but you are left out of the loop.

FB really is not very good, and as some mention too, folks you may have a good relation with, because you don’t sit and talk about politics, suddenly you may find them posting or reposting all kinds of (what to you seems to be ) drivel, or you see what you think is a dark underside to some folks you know. Without FB you may never have seen that and kept on good terms.

Then there is the sentimental, or bad joke drivel. Some folks pass on this trite, predictable, uninspiring inspirational messages, usually with a teddy bear, sunset, or some other sentimental image in the background, and starting with “if you share love...” Yada yada. Or “Remember....” advice.

Which is almost worse than finding out your cousin or old acquaintance is politically diametrically opposed to everything you believe in.

FB is insidious.
 
I agree but I resisted. Amazingly so did my Daughter although she Says FB is for older people. I am not very hip so I get by fine without it.
 
Facebook is what you make of it. If you don't like what someone is posting, unfollow them.
 
The main reason I try and avoid FB now is that Zuckerberg is advocating for government regulation and censorship of political expression on social media. How convenient now that his company is the big player.

Use the alternatives - Minds, MeWe, Gab.
 
I’ll get a Facebook account when Zuckerberg starts cutting me a check each month for the use of my data.
 
An acquaintance from highschool just joined Facebook. I accepted his friend request last night. I woke up this morning to a message from him that contained nothing but a pic of himself in front of a white wall, without a shirt on. His timeline, nothing but nearly a dozen shirtless selfies in front of a white wall. Not out doing anything selfie worthy, just by a wall without a shirt on.

And he's going through all the women's photos commenting on how beautiful they are.

I'm creeped out and feel dirty.
