Every year around Memorial Day I re-read Bill Mauldin's book Up Front. If you like Mauldin's cartoons, you'll enjoy reading some of the stories behind them in his book. More importantly, though, it gives some great insight into what life was like for the infantry fighting in Europe.

Great book, my mom received it as a book-of-the-month club entry in the 40s. I found it in the mid 60s. When my mom learned I was reading it, she hid it. A lot of the cartoons had swearing in them....

Maudlin write a much more detailed version later, called "The Brass Ring." It had details they wouldn't let him write about in the 40s, such as a visit to a French sex show.

I also have his book Back Home but I had not heard of The Brass Ring. I'll check it out. Just ordered a copy off Amazon.

Mauldin was an impressive talent.

More appropriate for Veteran's Day than Memorial Day, but....

Just finished reading The Brass Ring. Excellent book. Thanks for the suggestion!

I looked for Brass Ring and didn’t see it on Amazon, but I did find Up Front on eBay for $9. I’ll try to get to it next month, flipping through it has me looking forward reading it. Currently reading Gallipoli, which is good but kind of depressing.
