Sloped runways?!

My last lesson focused on touch-and-goes at ENW, and 7R is especially sloped. Thankfully, the wind was kind to us that day and there was very little other traffic besides an innocent helicopter in the distance.

Does anyone else find a downward-sloped runway intimidating? Is there any kind of correction that could be done to land as planned...idk, I just got frustrated because a couple of those landings, I hit the ground like a bag of bricks and was so thrown off by it that once I took off again...let's just say, nothing very graceful happened that day. I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to handle sloped runways better than I did.

When I flew into http://www.airnav.com/airport/14A with merely a 1% slope, the local pilot I spoke with said they always land uphill unless the tailwind is greater than 20 kts.

It’s really just one of those things that gets better the more you do it.

There’s a nearby airfield here that has a pretty significant slope on both ends, which makes the runway shaped like a ‘V’.



My first ever landing at this airport was pretty firm, but that improved pretty fast and now I don’t even notice it. It’s just like anywhere else to be honest. I’ve heard one of the locals say that they’re still not sure if it’s better to takeoff into the wind or takeoff downhill...

Usually students have the most difficulty with upslope because they flair too late and the runway is coming to to them.

At ENW the runway with the most slope is only has a .7% grade. This means in each 100 ft of distance the runway slopes 8.4 inches. The more you float down the runway the lower the runway gets.

For a down sloped runway using the proper airspeed, maintaining an aim point, and proper use of the throttle will reduce floating down the runway.

Kamloops. BC has a "land uphill, takeoff downhill" strip. At the end of the landing roll you must turn 90 degrees to keep from rolling backward down the hill.
