Hello everyone,

A customer told me that he read about my product Strutwipe on PoA so I thought I would introduce it to the community. Strutwipe is 100% woven cotton wipe with infused 5606. It comes in a zip lock pouch so you can take it on your airplane. No more opening cans of 5606 and pouring on dirty rags to keep your landing gear struts clean. Just Google Strutwipe!

Send me a pack and I'll give you a review ;) Lot of planes to test it on

Strutwipe will be Oshkosh at the Aircraft Spruce hangar booth 1156. Stop on by and say hi and I'll give you a free sample for the road.

What's 5606? Your website talks about 5605 and 83282, but then it lists Royco 782 and 756 but I haven't the faintest idea which one I should use. I have a can of hydraulic fluid with a sheet metal screw in the top that I pour into a rag now. I've had that can for years and as far as I can tell it still cuts right through the grease. Your idea is pretty sweet, esp with the glove, but darned if I know which one is the right one for my 172 nose strut.

Hi Mr. VFR

Yeah, there is a little history to that. 756 is 5606 hydraulic fluid. If you go to Q and A tab, it explains it. Your Cessna uses MIL-PFR-5606 in the nose and is what I wipe down my CFI's 172 in the before and after pics. So you want to use SW-756

What's 5606? ...

5606 is your standard mineral-based hydraulic fluid. The red stuff. It's in your brake system and in your struts. They sell it at the FBO. Usually.

There are several mil-spec numbers that are compatable with Mil-spec-H 5606. All are red and mineral based.
Kerosene and several other light oils that are great cleaners for the Hydraulic parts in hydraulic systems

The cool thing about Strutwipe is it's self contained. No need for open cans or extra dirty rags or paper towels. Once the landing gear struts are clean, Strutwipe can be used serval times before proper disposal. Just put a pack in your flight bag or door pouch for cross country trips. Easy preventive maintenance with no mess!

And you can use it for checking the engine oil? Picking up nasty oil-soaked rags from the back of a rented 172 is gross ;-)

Though I guess if you are renting then you are not wiping the strut and if you are wiping the strut then you have something clean to check the oil with.

I figured I'd be hammered for asking a such a noob question so I appreciate the insight from the more mechanically inclined.

I discovered the cheap gloves in the aviation section of Harbor Freight not too long ago and got a box of hundred. While doing my last oil change managed to keep respectably oil-free. Having a little kit in my maintenance bag in the back sounds like a convenient idea.

I have used these. I do like them, but have found they are good for just one use. If you don't like overhauling struts, keep them clean. ;-)

Hi there Rockymountain I think it's pretty cool that you have used my Strutwipes before. I have found that once the struts are clean, I get about 3 to 4 uses out of the 6X6 size before it gets too dirty. Are you using the same size.

Strutwipe has patent laminated package that will not allow 5606 to osmosis through, unlike Zip-Loc bags.

Greetings Ravioli,

You are totally correct in your assessment. A Zip-Loc bag will not hold will not hold MIL-PFR-5606.

As engineering student, I working fulltime maintaining aircraft to provide for my family. At the time, I was an research engineering student when I came up with this idea. In my limit spare time, I spent the next two years in devolving my Strutwipe . At the same time, crazy as it may seem, I had two kiddos in collage. I actually high fived my son going in between classes. That was the coolest thing I have every done in my life. And believe me, I've a lot of bad ass missions. I used as many cots items as could until they were all disqualified. I finally developed my own patent plastic and aluminum vapor proof container for Strutwipe. You can put 5606 in a plastic bag and it will leak through. Place 5606 in a plastic milk or water gallon jug and it will leak through. I have faith in my process and I guarantee my Strutwipes for three (3) after manufacture.

We have the strut wipes in our shop. Some of the guys like using them, personally I would rather use a reusable rag and 5606 rather than generate more garbage. That said, I can see the value for an owner in GA (or us on a road trip) as its much cleaner than hauling around 5606.

On the plastic products leaking comment, I dont buy into that much. Our 5606 bottles are plastic and they have been around for quite a while.

I buy the 2 box package of nitrile gloves at Costco, keep one in the hangar and the other in the car. Always handy for messes. And a roll of shop towels (those blue towels at Costco) for cleaning the struts.

Polishes up flux capacitors extremely well and then you can use it for fuel!

A cotton wipe with 5606 in a zip lock bag or the same with a glove?
