Please celebrate appropriately with a Encharito, a Chalupa, and some other fine fare at Taco Bell.

[I almost forgot what day it is, but my work calendar has all the holidays on it and it has today marked as Cinco de Mayo - Latin Culture. Someone should tell the Latinos...]

One of my favorite holidays...

Recommending Taco Bell? Hmmmm...

Why do we celebrate something that had nothing to do with Americans?
Why do all Latinos need to celebrate something that only involved Mexicans?

Rhetorical questions

Funny, in my small corner of New Mexico there is no celebration at all....

I saw on the news that "only 22% of Americans know what Cinco De Mayo commemorates."

I couldn't stop laughing, since those 22% don't know that it means nothing anywhere but the US.

Cinco de Mayo is not a universal holiday in Mexico, and a large portion of the population ignore the date. Its appeal in the US centers around having another excuse for drunken celebration.

Shouldn't this be condemned as cultural appropriation?

And a damned good one btw. I have it on good authority not all of us "Latinos" are Mexican, nor do we recognize the Mexican hegemony in the usual description of the "Hispanic experience" in this Country as legitimate nor nuanced.

The reality is that one cultural truism in this context, is that America is ultimately about consumerism by hook or by crook. As such, we'll celebrate anything in the name of hustling a buck. Its why our children like to go abroad for bona fide "culture".

To be fair, American "culture" abroad has always been lambasted as insipid, "identity-less", "disposable consumption". Just like the pop music we're known for, or the "souless" transplant-laden, economic-nomadism-motivated, apathetic suburban communities most dwell in. Proverbial non-biodegradable containers like the ones we carry our processed National fast food with, or what our cheaply built, overpriced tract McMansions look like. Now, as educated citizens we certainly can and should probably proffer a more nuanced description of our Worldly contributions to human civilization. Thing is, Mattress sales and the perennial obsessions over finding another excuse for more drinking and driving to suppress the fact we're a broke cohort after housing is paid for, just doesn't strike me as one of them. :D

It celebrates the defeat of some cheese-eating surrender monkeys, which was a big accomplishment for the day, but really not a strategic win. They were back sipping wine within a year.

Of course, most Americans couldn't tell you the significance of November 11 or many other holidays in the US.

It's celebrated in Mexico, but pretty much only in the local region around where the battle took place that the date commemorates. I forgot the name of the town. EDIT: It's Puebla, had to look it up.

I'm sure there are some disgruntled Kalifornistan natives who feel left out because their big holiday is on a weekend and they can't shut down all the schools (and create controversy).

It's every bit as appropriate as St. Patrick's Day... and I don't hate on those who celebrate either. It's probably a good thing that our friends on the southren border sent those they defeated back home...

Meh - it was an excuse to my wife to allow me to buy Taco Bell. And it worked... she fell for it. My son and I are proudly chowing-down on a Chalupa Box, and a “Party Pack” of Taco Supremes. I’ll figure out weight-and-balance next weekend (Mother’s Day) when my lightened wallet will offset the tacos I am eating today.

And then you have Father's Day to go back the other way. LOL

All I know is it gave me a reason to search out a new to me, date inspired recipe for dinner (c'mon, man, Taco Bell?) and share a couple tequila based drinks with my son ("I don't think I've ever had a Margarita" "You call yourself a college student?").

All are welcome to appropriate my culture in return by drinking a Natty Boh on, well, any day they choose.

It’s the one day year we get a reprieve from hearing about the royal family. We fought an war to get out from under them, but can’t open any news feed anymore without headlines trumpeting the latest gossip. Will be back to normal tomorrow.

Well slap my ass and call me Bridget! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!:cheerswine::drink:

Happy Birthday, JCranford!

Uh, negative on the slappage and Bridget-ness, Ghost Rider. Aforementioned wife has implemented a TSR... a temporary slappage restriction.

I rest my case.

I wait until someone steals a base in the World Series. I still remember hitting three taco bells on the way home from work the day after Taco Bellsbury got one in the Boston series.

Dug out my login to confirm. I live in Mexico. Puebla has a large celebration. The rest of the country celebrates it to various degrees for the same reasons as the US does, an excuse to party. The real independence day is 9/16. And god help you if you want to try and get anything done around that time of year!

I would probably not be shocked but saddened to learn what percent of Americans don't know what 4th of July means. I'm sure I've heard a story of someone in a foreign land that wondered why that country didn't celebrate it. England maybe.
