The MyFlightBook thread

Not quite sure what caused that. I looked up the error message on the server and it arises in exactly two scenarios: (a) the flight does not include a specified aircraft (doesn't seem to be the case if you are showing N321DL) or (b) something is invalid in the aircraft's data itself on the server (I checked, not the case here either).

Hmm. Now what? And, thank you very much for looking into this! :)

No problem, but we should probably take this to email.

Hey! Great app!
A question about Visited Airports feature - any way to remove visits in an FFS?
Those old simulator don't even have decent visual systems sometimes to see the actual airport...

Two ways. You can put the airports visited in the sim in another field like comments. Or, just click "Change Query" (website) to restrict to real aircraft.

Thanks!
Also, any plans on implementing the full 117.25?

I do support part 117.25(b). Assume by "full" you mean c/d/e? The challenge with these is that they require a ton of inference or explicit data entry - e.g., figuring out where your "home base" is, or if you had an 8 hour rest opportunity.

Well there is a part 117 field in settings that aren't likely to change often or at all, very much like a "home base" setting - set and forget for 99.9% of users

I was thinking to take advantage of the GPS tracking capabilities from the app's flight real time logging to help with the "theater" part of the chapter, since it is defined by longitude and nothing else.

A somewhat less elegant addition would be to have another setting for post and pre flight duty period - as in setting for example 30 minutes after end of last flight of FDP to be the post-flight duty period (=start of rest).

And then same for pre flight (=end of rest="reporting time")

Don't even really need GPS for that (but it does require hitting the database a bit more to look up airports). Still need home base, though.

Isn't rest period by definition the end of one flight-duty period to the start of the next?

@EricBe ....

As I input and edit some recent flights via the web portal, I see I have some "additional flight properties" that I no longer use that are cluttering up that box.

How do I remove them?

Adding them is obvious and simple. I'm just not seeing what to do to remove them.

Hi @EricBe - a "fun" feature request:

Some years ago, my wife asked me if I'd ever flown on a certain day. Maybe Christmas or my birthday or something. I of course had to check each year of my logbook, and then thought it would be an interesting statistic to try to to keep track of. So I used a paper calendar like https://www.printable2019calendars.com/preview/2019_Calendar_One_Page_Vertical_Grid

and on a rainy day went through my logbooks and checked off each day I had flown on. (I had about 800 hours at the time. It actually took less time that you'd think...)

Then each year I updated it. About 8 or 9 years later now, and it's interesting to see that I have still never flown on some days of the year - Christmas Day being one of them (just knocked Christmas Eve out this past year). I think there are only about 6 days in the year I haven't flown on at this point. But a few years ago, it was fun to see the patterns which had developed - for example, seeing that January and February were pretty light months, not many days flown then. But then there'd be streaks, for example, where I had never flown from June 21-28 or something.

So naturally, with this information, I started to target certain dates. This past March 4th was one such day, but I since missed it due to weather and scheduling, now I have to wait a whole year to have another chance!

Anyway, not earth-shattering importance, of course, but it has been fun to track, and even has encouraged me to go fly in some cases. For example, on 2/29/2012 I went flying just to have flown on Feb 29th (got night current too).

It would be fun if MFB was able to generate a report like this!

Feb 29th is going to take some planning.

I love the idea, let me think about how to do it. See https://github.com/ericberman/MyFlightbookWeb/issues/259

If you implement this, we're gonna need a special flight properties for September 19th, labeled

called the controller "Matey" and started each radio transmission with "Avast!" or "Ahoy there".

Ended the flight with a bottle of rum

For taxi permission at the controlled airport, called up "Landlubber control".

Thanks.... got er done that way.....

What do you think about adding a declutter link/button to that area of the input form that takes you to the "declutter your life" post?
Ummm...wouldn't that link/button add clutter? :) I think I should add an FAQ item instead.

Yeah, a button labeled "FAQ" to the right of the Profile button works....

I've used this app for a long time, primarily via the web interface. I am not sure if I have ever noticed that banner and those buttons across the bottom. I must not scroll down very often.

I must not scroll down very often.
Same here. like the classic "heat map" of where people look at a web page, I'm an upper left corner and then to the right sort of Aggie.

I think I am always looking across the top, occasionally down at the list of flights, and I guess really rare to scoll to the bottom? Who knew?

Maybe I need a "Help" or "Support" menu item that would contain FAQ, blog, videos, and contact links? BTW, I *think* these are a bit more visible in the mobile apps (right on the sign-in page). I always thought it was something of a web convention to put all this stuff down at the bottom.

@EricBe I've got a bug report (I think) and a question. I've been using MyFLightBook and crossing against my paper log book. Really glad to have the capability to export into Excel BTW!

I use the date range function in the iOS app (iPhone 8+, iOS 12.1.4 (16D57) ) to select a single day to find a particular flight to correct. I can do that once and it works fine. If I go back in and set it to a different day, when I back out to the list, that app complains that I can't access the fights without logging in. If I kill the app and restart it it works just fine. I can do a single day, then when I do another single day it complains again. Very repeatable. Probably obscure.

Question: Is there a way to delete a flight? I found a couple of fat fingered duplicates in the electronic log book. I can remove all the contents except plane (0.0 hours in all categories, 0 totals in landings, etc.) but not remove it.

In the grand scheme of things these are nits and I appreciate the excellent free product!

Yes. And when viewing your logbook via your web browser, it's super simple.

At the far right of each entry line is a downward pointing arrow (chevron?), click that to see different options you can do with that entry. Included is delete the flight.

Thanks. I was looking online and didn’t see it. I’ll check again.

Huh - I can't reproduce that, at least not with those steps. Can we take that offline (myflightbook@gmail.com) and figure out how to reproduce it?

On iOS app, you can delete a flight by swiping left on it in the list of recent flights.

Thanks. I just never thought of swiping. DOH! And I'm not a new iOS user.

Sure. I'll get the exact steps down and get some screen shots and email them to you.

Here is something I just came across that might make a nice feature. As a CFI I enter the name of my student in the Flight Properties. It would be nice to be able to pull up a list of all the students I have logged. I couldn't quite figure out an easy way to do that.

If you type in a partial student name, does it autocomplete once it finds a unique match? It does that for names of instructors, passengers, safety pilots, and approaches, so I would imagine it does for students as well. What this tells me is that Eric has a database table of the unique previously-entered names for these fields, so he could possibly give us a way to see these lists.

That was my thought. It does autofill for previously used names, which is a nice feature so I make sure they are always spelled the same. I was mostly just curious to know just how many different students I have flown with, without having to go back and manually figure it out.

Yes I'm lazy...

I have developed free software in the past. Those efforts were universally driven by my own laziness. It's the programmer's irony: Why spend 10 minutes to do a task when you can instead spend 100 hours automating it?

LOL. Yes, I autofill based on previously used values, and no I don't have an explicit way to see all the names. But there is an easy way to figure that out: download your logbook into a spreadsheet and then turn on filtering (at least in excel). Then click on the drop-down for the filter and you'll see all the names. Or, insert a pivot table and drag the "Name of Student" field to the "Rows" field and you'll see them all displayed nicely.

I'll give that a go! I was curious if there was a shortcut somewhere.

Eric, Great job, thank you so much. I came to find myFightbook from being ****ed off at all the Coradine shenanigans. As a professional pilot I am very impressed and happy with what you've done.

I do have one question and I admit I did not read through the 8 pages of this thread, so maybe it's been asked and answered, but here goes.

If you die today, what happens to your app in the future?

Thank you for a great product.

If you die today, what happens to your app in the future?
Thanks! Well, let's hope it's not today, but the short answer is "nothing" should happen. I've worked hard to reduce the need for true hands-on support, I have a couple of people who can step in and have the requisite authorization and passwords/etc., and there's sufficient cash in the associated account to cover hosting costs for quite some time (thanks to generous supporters).

But this is also why the code is open source: anybody can take up the mantle, continue to make improvements and fix bugs, etc.

I'm trying to use the "Ratings Progress" feature for my PPL.

But when I run it - these 2 don't check off:

upload_2019-6-5_16-33-2.png

In spite of having a 207 nm XC, marked as solo time, with 4 Takeoffs - Towered Airport and 4 Landings - Towered Airport recorded. (I flew to a towered airport, did 3 laps around the pattern, then flew to a non-towered, then flew back to origin).

Does anyone know what fields these entries are looking for?

Edit: Longest leg is 78nm on the XC
