Yes, it's true, I did it (and it wasn't the first time)...yet I am not ashamed.

I just flew a 205 NM trip in a 172...without the magenta line....yep...no ipad, no iPhone, no i-anything. I used a paper chart and a single VOR receiver. And without the magenta line or little blue airplane on an i-device (or android, this is an inclusive environment) I was also able to determine my position at various points during the flight. I determined my approximate distance to various checkpoints using this thing on my wrist called a watch. After all of this, I reached my destination safely. And best of all, it was pretty easy. So yes, for those of you out there that have been wondering, it is still possible to navigate without any form of GPS. I know @eman1200 will condemn this behavior as he has a very strict 5 iPad minimum for flight. I hope he will still be my friend after this.

P.S. I also got my briefing and filed my flight plan.....on the phone! Shhh... don't tell!

Was it a landline phone with a cord or a ‘smart phone’ ?

Either way I’m proud of ya dude.

Yeah but you filed. That ruined it. A real pilot would just use flight following and not bother filing. Nice try.

You mean people still do that? That's about as bad as NORDO, the horror! Glad you made it.

That is encouraging.

I'll keep it in mind during my upcoming 1800 mile flight with nothing but a single comm radio...

I ain't skeerd...

From what I understand the FAA typically frowns upon flying through IMC conditions while not on an IFR flight plan
IMC on spinning gyros, some powered by a vacuum pump? Talk about a death wish! :yikes:

Well now that’s just crazy man! Paper only without a GPS and IFR??? Rollin’ the dice.

Yer the last one to ever do that.

Arriving at your destination without a magenta line?

When I read it, I assumed you were VFR. Which is no big accomplishment. I love pilotage and fly that way frequently. IFR, another story, I'm impressed.

Can I take a life insurance policy out on you? Your time is limited...

When you tell someone you flew IFR with a single NDB and only available in the rear seat (Radar Approach available required at departure and destination) and probably the stupidest thing ever...but it was the Army and the AH-64A was sold to Congress as an IFR capable all weather day/night aircraft...some one got smart and changed the -10 a few years later...Well done on your flight and although GPS has made us safer a little time distance and heading is a lost art...

And you posted about it publicly? Reporting to the FSDO for careless and wreckless.

Kidding of course. Nicely done.

Yeah but you used an auto pilot...

When I did my qualifying cross country many years ago, it was without radio or any electronics, just a sectional, compass and watch! How time change, don't know how I would do now if I had to do it again. Well, I would be in trouble as my intermediate landing was at Luton, then a grass field and now he third London airport!!

If you didn’t fly through a barn or under a bridge, I’m not seeing the reason for this post....

when u said u did the unthinkable I thought maybe u slept with martha king.

She is the female version of that guy who painted on PBS Sunday mornings back in the day...!

Does it have to be in a plane?
The word "fly" does not automatically mean plane. So, I guess not. However, getting flying high illicitly does not count either.

I also believe you are one of several here that would be willing to do it.
