I bought a GX50 as a supposed slide in replacement for a 604 Loran. It is not. The tray and plug need to be changed and the gps antenna does not fit the old cable plug . Anyone installed one?

I haven’t sorry, but I know someone with one that just told me today he’s yanking it because you can’t get updates anymore.

It's really not too bad to install fresh. Changing the tray is straightforward mechanical installation, just takes some time. Same with the antenna. What indicator are you wiring to? Trying to make it IFR?

The IM is available on the web. If you're not using an indicator or mfd with it, it's pretty simple. You'll need proper crimpers for the rg cable and DB pins and sockets.

Nav data support ends December 2020. I honestly wouldn't waste time with it especially if using for IFR. But as to the install its not hard at all but you will need an indicator with it and likely a serializer for the encoder. I installed a GX60 in mine a few years ago.

The GX55 is a direct swap, not the GX 50

GX50... hrm... you might want to stop right here and go no further. That unit is on life support at this point. Most work involving the GX50 is to facilitate its removal and replacement.

Thanks. It was an easy job. I now
have a useable GPS for $270. Instead of useless Loran.

Simtech - where are you getting this information? I have a GX-60 in my NAvion and Jepp is supposed to quit supplying database updates in June of this year. Has something changed or is there another source of database updates?

Effective December 3, 2020
Yes, after enough outcry Jepp and Garmin worked on a solution to extend it to allow people to upgrade after the bulk of the ADS-B rush finishes.
