Hello
Low time pilot here based in Cleveland at Burke lakefront airport KBKL.
Beside the local flight to Carrol county KTSO for a pie and Port Clinton KPCW for their fine diner, what other destinations can you recommend for a day trip?
Thinking when the weather gets little warmer, to go to Niagara Falls and of course put in bay, but I can use additional suggestions.
Thanks for all the help.

Dayton for the Air Force Museum.

Welcome to POA!

I might have to pick your brain about some of the destinations you’ve already been to.

Franklin , PA used to be real good. Don't know if the Italian restaurant at the airport is still there. See the thread a week ago on Falling Waters.

Hello

Hey, I used to live in Akron, and work in Cleveland. How far is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from KBKL? Walking distance, if we fly in?
Edit: I can also recommend the Museum of the United States Air Force. Too bad you cannot land there! (I have landed at the adjacent WPAFB, back in the day.)

Fly to Sandusky and go to Cedar Point?

:dunno:

Burke KBKL is a great destination.
Everything is walking distance since you right downtown.
Right next door is the ww2 submarine museum highly recommended as well as the rock hall and science museum all right next door.
Few more blocks south you are right by the baseball and basketball stadiums with all kinds of food options.

First prize is a week's vacation in Cleveland. Second prize is two week's vacation in Cleveland.
Ha ha. Cleveland used to be a pilot base for United. It was considered a "junior" base. Nobody from elsewhere wanted to bid it, so when there were openings they'd assign new hires there. Trouble was, there were never any openings because once the new hires got there they found out what a great place it is—better than home! Things you don't hear much about, like the "Emerald Necklace" of parks ringing the city, water sports, Playhouse Square and more. United stuck me in Chicago rather than my birthplace I bid for, Cleveland.

Kenny - The Rock Hall is within walking distance of BKL. The picture is old - Hornblowers is not there anymore but there are a few restaurants in the harbor.

Salem Airpark - 38D - has a restaurant on the field. Also, of course there's i74 Urbana with one of the nicest diners on the field you'll find. Why stay in north Ohio when you're flying? I second the Armstrong museum - there's a loaner car to get you there at KAXV.

A dollar says you never spent much time there.

Cleveland gets a bad rap (the mistake by the lake) but I worked for over three years within 70 miles of Cleveland (built 11 O'Reilly Auto Parts stores) and never had more fun in any area where I've lived (and I've lived and worked in about 30 states).

Beautiful area, hard working people (best work ethic I've encountered outside of Wisconsin and S. Dakota), lots to do and...diversity! I loved all the different cultures in that area.

And the best thing...

pierogis!!!

I recently flew in to BKL, NOTHING is in walking distance.....................when it’s 13 degrees! :)

You could fly over to Kelleys Island (not as busy as PutInBay) and get in some good short field landing practice.

I also recommend for a day trip to head down to I74, the on field restaurant has good cheap food, and pie! Also on the field is a nice aviation museum.

Also KLUK had a great on field restaurant. Its a quick cab ride to all that cincy has to offer

Where to park at BKL (and CGF) without having to pay big bucks?

I was merely referencing the old joke (usually it's Buffalo). I grew up in Akron as an Indians fan, watched them and the Browns at the old stadium (back when neither won, ever!), and also worked in Cleveland (as well as Parma) for seven years. So I've spent a lot of time in The Mistake by the Lake. I've even boated in the flaming Cuyahoga River, and visited the ancient submarine, and eaten at Pat Joyce.
You can wire transfer the buck ...

I got my first lapdance in The Flats.

Grew up in Ann Arbor and spent a lot of time touring the area in the back
of our family Cherokee.

I second Kelley's Island (89D). The runway is a bit short, so practice your
short-field skills before you go.
Also Carroll County (TSO) for the PIE! (great little restaurant there).

At BKL - tell ground you want to park on the public ramp. It is the area in front of the tower and just east of the tower. There is still a small landing fee but you don’t have to pay a ramp fee. I have never parked at CGF.

Greg - unfortunately the restaurant at Salem closed. It is too bad - it was a great stop.

Wow that's a shame, thanks for the heads up Jim. I noticed no mention of it on Airnav but figured they weren't paying the advertising fees or something.

There are golf cart rentals on Kellys.

It's quite walkable if you're energetic.
It's about half a mile from the airport into the abandoned quarry, which is quite cool. If you keep walking through the quarry to the west end and turn north, it's about 2 miles total from the airport to the glacial grooves.
A friend and I did a full tour walking: airport, quarry, glacial grooves, "downtown" and back to the airport. Total around 5-1/2 miles, spent maybe 2-1/2 hours.

What I've always wondered is who was the sick MF'er who decided to build the Browns stadium out on the lake. Went to two games when I was up there and both were bitterly cold, one with decent lake effect snow going on.

Seems it woulda been far smarter to switch the locations of the Browns and Indians stadiums. Out on the lake in the summertime...yeah baby...

As an aside, I had a two BR apartment at the Marriott Residence Inn out by the airport for almost three years (it's now Sonesta ES suites). I'd ride the shuttle to the airport, hop on the train, and go downtown for dinner, a ball game, to party, all three, whatever, once or twice a week. I could be downtown in 30 minutes and didn't have to worry about driving. Fun times.

They built it there so the cold quickly freezes the tears of despondent Browns fans. As a life long fan, we have suffered greatly, but I was very happy with last year's team and am excited for the future.
