I fly out of KGPM and will need to do a ADS-B certification flight in a few weeks. Can these flights be done near the DFW bravo airspace or am I better off just flying to nearest charlie airspace (Abilene?)

Yes to within the space around DFW.

@texasag93 just did it for our club's Bonanza based at KDTO. He can provide you more details.

Also, if you send me your email via PM, I will provide an invite to the North Texas Aviators Facebook Group. Another good local resource for you!

Thanks kindly for your response. I'll check with texasag93.

Just get on Flight following and launch GPM to TKI. Then over ADS change destination to DTO. Then when you see downtown Denton change destination to GPM.

Land, pick up the report. Done.

OK. So I take off from Grand Prairie with ff to McKinney. Fly to McKinney and change destination to Denton. Fly to Denton then change destination back to GP and land. What about all the required climbs, descents, 360 turns, etc? Won't the bravo altitude controls limit what I can do as I transition the airspace?

We got VFR flight following and told the controller that we were going to fly north of Denton , stay below the 4000 ft shelf, and fly for 30 minutes for the ADSB flight check.

We flew east and west for 30 minutes. We did some steep turns left and right. The controller asked us to stay north of the Bravo if we could and we complied (not a requirement as we were at 3500) but south of the Mode C veil. We never entered the Bravo. We flew for 35 minutes to make sure we surpassed the 30 minute requirement.

Thank you sir. That sounds like the best plan. You have plenty of 4000 ft. shelf up there between Denton and Ray Roberts so lots of room to take care of the ads-b requirements. Your assistance is much appreciated!

It's not a matter of being afraid of the Bravo. The concern is having enough room under different altitude shelves to do the required maneuvers to meet ads-b flight certification requirements.o_O

You can't do a 360 or change altitudes on flight following? Stop the presses.

Affirm on the 360 and altitude so keep the presses running. My only concern in the bravo is a lack of space for a climb or descent due to maximum altitude on a particular shelf of the airspace. I thought you had to do a couple of one minute ascents and descents as part of the required maneuvers so at 500fpm I would need about 1000 ft. of available vertical space. I hope by the time I get my ppl I'll have all this figured out! ;)

So wait a tick. You're a student?

IF you're doing the route I identified on Flight Following you're likely cleared into the Bravo and the shelves don't mean a thing,

Gotcha! No, I'm not a student-just a rusty pilot. Thank you for the info though. I'm still learning and will take all the help I can get. Does flight following always mean you have clearance into the Bravo or do they sometimes require you to maintain below the required altitude? I take off from GPM right into the dfw approach and have to be very careful about maintaining below max altitude in the shelf. <];-D

I do 360s and altitude changes in the Bravo quite a bit, thank you very much. Just ask the controller nicely for what you want to do, lol.

No, flight following does not guarantee a Bravo clearance (and always remember to copy that Bravo clearance back to them as well) and they might tell you to maintain outside the Bravo - which can include below it.

The specific maneuvers are definitely not required, and could possibly be detrimental. My rebate just got processed today and I only did gentle turns and some slow flight, all at reduced rpm to keep the GPM low. No high speed, no climbs or descents, no steep turns, and it worked out great inside the mode C veil.

Flight Following and clearances are two totally different things. If you're on FF and your route takes you close to B airspace, you will wind up talking to approach. They might or might not clear you into the B airspace.
