I have spent much time reviewing the FAA and several other websites with concerns about how the certifications auto default down classes as time passes I do understand that if differs if you are over or under the ago of 40. So far I have you hold a class 1 for 12 months and then it defaults to a class 3 with a remaining 48 if you are under 40....then...if you are older than 40 you hold a first class for 6 months and it will auto default to a third class for a remaining 18 months. I am somewhat confused with the auto defaults??

My understanding is that the 1st class is only good for 1st class privileges for 6 months, then for 2nd class privileges for the next 6 months, and then for 3rd class privileges for the remainder of the validity period of your certificate, depending on your age (4 more years if under 40, 1 more year if over 40, both ages being at the time of your last medical exam and not your current age).

I am not certain whether the time for which a 1st class is valid for 1st class privileges also depends on your age. I have never read this, but since I was over 40 when I started flying and am not a CFI, I never paid much attention to that issue.
 
Trying to make this simple. All Class II privileges expire in 12 months for those who hold a Class I or 2.

For those under 40, Class I privileges are 12 months and Class 3 privileges are 60 months.

For those over 40, Class I privileges are 6 months and Class 3 are 24 months.

The only thing age effects is duration of Class 1 and 3 privileges.
 
So if I am say 26....I hold my first class for 12 months after that does it default to a second or does it go straight to a third (for a remaining 60 months).

And if I were say 47...I hold my first class for 6 months will I then go to a second or will I go straight to a third class (for a remaining 24 months).

I do understand regardless the age you are a second class is only valid for 12 months I am just confused where it (a second class) goes into play through this “chain”.

I’m sorry if I am making it more complicated then it really is just wanting to make sure I have a grasp on it.

Clips final line states age only effects class one and three which I fully understand...my last question....more simplified...asks...does a class one go to a class two then to a class three? Or class one then to a class three?

Ex:

26yr old: class one 12 months
THEN class two 12 months
Then class three 60 months

OR. Class one 12 months THEN class three 60 months.

To clarify, the Class 1 remains a Class 1 for the duration. After 12 months you may only exercise the privileges of a Class 3. And the medical is good for a total of 60 months.

Neither of those are correct.

The valid periods (6, 12, 24, or 60 months) for any medical are all from date of issue.

A person under the age of 40 could obtain a 1st class medical certificate, at which point he or she could then:
- exercise privileges requiring a 1st class medical certificate for 12 months from the date the certificate is issued
- exercise privileges requiring a 2nd class medical certificate for 12 months from the date the certificate is issued
- exercise privileges requiring a 3rd class medical certificate for 60 months from the date the certificate issued

In effect, for a person under 40, it goes from 1st class for 12 months to a 3rd class for an additional 48 months.
 
So pretty much your 1st and 2nd “work simultaneously”
