New iPad Mini could be coming.....

What do you think it will do that the current one doesn’t?

Might be conflating rumors of a new Mac Mini with an iPad Mini, though Kuo has a pretty good record re: Apple rumors.

That said, imagine a 9.7" screened iPad with no home button and no bezels. Overall dimensions would not be a whole lot bigger than the current Mini. In any case, we should know on Oct. 30 at the next Apple event.

Having extensive experience with the iPad mini... I find it to be slow running Foreflight (my app of choice) I like how quickly the apps load and how fast I can flip between data fields on my Pro while flying.. maybe it's just me......

I could go for that!

Mines plenty fast, just can’t install bloat ware.

As an aside, I go back and forth between a Mini 2 and an Air 2. I use the Mini 2 when I don’t have WiFi, like at our new home
or traveling, since it has cellular enabled.

Subjectively, the Mini 2 is maybe 10% to 20% slower than the Air 2, but still perfectly serviceable. And WingXPro7 runs fine.

Without a doubt my fastest iDevice is my iPhone X. It has a big enough screen to suit many of my needs, including air navigation.

But regardless, I’ll be watching the Apple event closely.

My mini is still fine, it's not that it's slowed down it's that everything else has gotten faster. The biggest issue is all the stuff they have added to foreflight. It just takes too much processing power.

iPad mini 4 is ok but hasn’t been updated in 2 years and needs a cpu update for sure.

Seems to be coming but I hope for pencil support. I’ve used a 10 inch pro yoke mounted and it wasn’t too big. I’ve now switched to mini 4. Can’t wait for a boast in processing.

The "iPad mini 5" has been the subject of much recent speculation. According to recent reports, the fifth-generation iPad mini will follow the same design as the previous model. It will apparently not have much in the way of design changes, and continue to have features like Touch ID instead of shifting to Face ID, the Lightning connector instead of USB-C, and will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack that has disappeared from other Apple products.

Ugh. :mad::mad2:

IMO, the main reason the Mini didn't sell better was that, after the 2nd generation, they started to lag behind their larger counterparts in performance and specs. Then, they stopped updating them because they didn't sell well enough! Are these the same people who were in charge of marketing Firefly?

I'll still buy one if it comes out this way because my 2 is really a dog these days, but they really need to keep up with the rest of the product line and come out with one that has a larger edge-to-edge screen and Face ID.

I have been holding out with my Mini 2, and even my wife's 'budget iPad' from 2017 is much faster. So I guess if they don't release a Mini 5 I'll have to get the bigger one.

Same design but faster processor? That works for me. Without facial recognition et al. presumably they're going to market this as a budget option, so I expect the price to be reasonable, as far as apple products go. For me, all I need it to do well is run ForeFlight. My iPhone pretty much handles everything else.

It'd work, yes... But I would really like to see the edge-to-edge screen. These eyes ain't gettin' any younger. :(

Only one thing bad about the edge to edge screen. Ram will not make the snap in EZ-Rollr cradle. That kills it for me... I bought a new full screen version and when I found out the only option is the universal crappy mounts I took it back.
Same deal with the phone. I would love the full screen X but nothing available but the universal mounts. I use the snap in mounts on my bikes, Boat, airplanes etc.

Funny that people want facial recognition. I like Touch ID. Of course my mini2 has neither.
I definitely like the fingerprint unlock on my iPhone 8. And my mini 2 is still clunking along though ForeFlight is getting slower...

I was in an Apple store just a few minutes ago looking at iPads. The processing power is impressive. But I like the small size. I will say the split screen on the 12” might sway me. But I don’t have a yoke mount anyway. Hmmm.

My mini2 and Foreflight has degraded to the point of almost unusable. I looked at FltPlan Go, and when I downloaded it, it needed the o/s upgraded, to the point that I pretty much assumed "yeah, that will kill the poor old mini, for sure"...

I like the fingerprint unlock on my 6S. I was thinking that if I ever replaced it, I would get an 8, which is the last model with fingerprint unlock. But so far, the 6S is working fine, so no need to upgrade. I mostly only use my mini2 to download photos from my camera via an SD card/lightning connection. It works fine for that. Even when I was flying, I only used the mini for flight planning (FltPlan Go) and not for any type of navigation. But that ship has sailed.

Hm....I used the Ram X grip mount. Works fine and if the next version is edge to edge, thr X mount shouldn’t be a problem.

Bummer. Did they say why? Or are they just done with device-specific cradles?

Depending on the size of the new one, it might still be possible to make some edits to the existing Mini cradle.

I would encourage you to update - iOS 12 isn't as power-hungry as 11 was. I had kept my Mini 2 on 10, and didn't notice any performance drop going to 12.

That should let you keep the Mini 2 going longer, and probably get updates to a lot of apps that require 11 or 12.

Thanks, Kent. Good to know. I just assumed ... :)

The EZ-Rollr cradle has the part that snaps the ipad in and holds it. With the ipads that have a border it clips there. With the full screen ipads the clip would snap on the screen itself. So that leaves the universal cradles which I hate.

Time to get an appropriate case and retrofit it with a RAM ball mount, ideally there might be some easy to remove cases you could do that with. Alternatively they do have their Tab-Tite series which may work better than the X Grip.

I sure hope a new ipad mini is coming. Our 2s are getting doggy with ForeFlight in the plane. I had my 2 crater and stopped showing IFR plates, then totally crashed ForeFlight requiring a restart in the air a couple of weeks ago. Luckily we weren't in a place where it mattered, but it surprised me when it happened. Wouldn't mind getting a faster processor. A larger screen in the same package size would be nice, but I'm okay if not. I want the faster processor. :)

Well, the new ones don't completely lack a border, especially where the roller snaps on - That's between the "horns", where the cameras are. They might need to change the shape of the two corner pieces that hold the other end a bit, but that's certainly not an insur"mount"able problem. (hah... I kill me)

My wife and I just upgraded from 6S to XS, and have found the transiton to be far smoother than we expected.
