Yeah...I know they aren't in business anymore. Sometimes when I try to change frequencies the knob turns but the number doesn't change or it changes two numbers instead of just one. I eventually get it to the frequency I want but it takes a few more seconds. These radios will be changed eventually to something newer probably Trig or VAL. My question is, is this just something that needs to be cleaned and can any avionics shop do it? Or is this thing just wearing out?

it's worn-out.

There are plastic (nylon?) gears inside that wear out and strip. I don't think most shops will even work on them any more. I know for sure of one shop that won't.

Good luck finding parts. I had a NAV11 and a NAV12 red tagged for lack of parts quite a few years ago and junked them for something newer.

You can check on Barnstormers, they are a couple of shops still advertising that they fix Narco radios. You can also check idea2parts for the plastic gears, I don't believe the parts are certified, however. The plastic gears are most likely cracked and slipping on the hub. I replaced my Narco because because of the plastic gears.

Thanks fellas. I think I'll just tough it out until I replace them. There is a nav/comm I'm interested in but they haven't returned any phone calls or emails. Anyone know about matrixavionics.com? They're located in Georgia, specifically Gwinnett Country Airport (KLZU) They supposedly have a slide in replacement for the Narco nav/comm.

Talked to them on the phone a couple of weeks ago. Good plan, sounded sharp, but I bet they’re a year or more away from selling any product.

Thanks Spike, I got that impression too and their picture of the new product looks like a rendering.

When my Narco 11B com radio crapped out last year (same thing, stripped gears) I looked at one of the slide in replacements Aircraft Spruce sells, but decided a used Becker (the kind that goes in a 2" instrument hole) was a much better deal. Took out the working Narco Nav 11 VOR, too, since I'll never use it. But if anybody needs a working VOR or parts Com unit...

If it was practicable and affordable I'd have Becker avionics solely in my plane.

search this on fleabay

Narco 121/22 VOR Mhz / Khz / OBS gear broken? I can fix it!

You don’t indicate which Narco model number. They are different and the replacement options are different.
