Yeah, no bueno!!

I was bringing my old boat motor, which has been taking up space in my hangar, up to the house to get ready to sell it. Trailer was pulling just fine coming out of town, and I was keeping an eye on it in the mirrors. A few miles down the road, I scanned my mirrors again, and the dang axle had decided to come from together at 65 mph. Luckily, I was just about home, and I was able to ease it on to the house. Crazy!

P.S. Anybody need a Mercruiser 3.7L?

I don’t think anyone “needed” a bastardized Ford 460/GM bolt pattern 4-banger when it was new!

Hey now! They were getting the same kind of horsepower out of those 3.7L 4 bangers as the 5.0L V-8s, and with the aluminum block, much lighter. Paired with a moderm aluminum head, a street cam, modern ignition, and better water pump, these babies can be a pretty killer lightweight engine for a small car, truck, dune buggy, sand rail, etc. There are guys running them on dragsters in the lower classes. The only thing that made them less than stellar in marine applications is the heat exchanger cooling set-up.

Stock Chevy 5.0L at that time was 190 hp and weighed around 550 lbs.
Stock Merc 3.7 with 4bbl carb was rated at 185 hp and weighed 435 lbs.

Not that I'm interested in any of that. Just sayin'. They are the C-337 of boat engines.

just move the fender out a bit.

:yeahthat:

Seems a perfectly reasonable solution. That also allows you to put on wider rubber so the trailer corners well at high speed.
eman didn't mention this, but make sure you do both sides, or it'll look like it's from Texas despite the OK tag.

Lol I know, just messing with ya. They had some good ideas with it, just suffered from a few headaches, usually related to the engine overheating from the heat exchanger system (originally a 3”, later changed to a 4”). Caused them to blow head gaskets and such. Alternator was an interesting design as well, similar to an outboard design. I think they got great torque out of them, compared to the typical 4-banger models available back in the late 70’s.

True dat.

Although, I wonder if the head gasket issues were more a product of mating dissimilar metals as much as the heat. Always thought iron heads on an aluminum block was weird. The heat exchanger was definately finicky, but unfortunately, you can't run lake water through an aluminum block with favorable results.

Anyway, my trailer is broke.
