I'm trying to help someone with their phone/tablet but I don't use Garmin Pilot so I'm just wondering, is the app tied to the user's Google Play account? Or do you have a separate Garmin account that you use once you get the app installed on a phone? Would a new google play user/account have access to the prior Garmin app/subscription?

I haven't looked at the device yet, I just want to get some basic functionality before I have to look at it tomorrow.

He says he had a problem with the app and Garmin told him to delete everything and re-download it, but now he can't get into Google play to download he lost his password. They told him to try using Bing to download it which makes no sense to me on an Android device. Should be as easy as a password reset, but he says its not taking a new password. I guess I'll see whats up when I look at it.

Thanks.

When I used it on my tablet, you needed a separate Garmin account.
But it's been 3 or four years since I dumped it for Avare.

I don't 'think' google play is tied into GP at all. I have a separate Garmin account I use to link to GP/flygarmin

Garmin has a separate account system. The Google account does not have access to it. That said, the application itself is distributed through Google Play store, and therefore a user needs both: the Google account to download the app and the Garmin account to actually use it.

You can go to Bing and find an APK, then download and install it. I don't think it's a sufficiently secure practice. In addition, GP does not have a built-in update mechanism for the app (it updates the charts and other aviation data). So, I would rather work on securing a Google account for the device. They are easy to get if you cannot unlock your old one.

BTW, as you re-install, the new installation eats into your device allowance at Garmin's servers. The "old" installations are not discarded automatically. Once you are out, you have to go to Garmin's website, log in, and delete the unused instances. It's relatively painless, just be aware that it may be necessary.

As others have said it is tied to your Garmin account. I use it on my iPad and also on my iPhone (for very limited purposes on the ground). Haven't tried using it on an Andriod device, but I know that everything syncs up through the Garmin account.
