The biggest natural disaster of the twentieth century in the Netherlands is without a doubt the North Sea flood of 1953. It occurred on the night of Saturday, January 31 and the morning of Sunday, February 1. The floods struck the Netherlands the hardest.

If you want flood, look up the 'grote mandrenke' or the St Lucia flood.

Interesting history and wonderful photos. Thank you!

What he said. I really enjoyed reading your write-up.

I feel a special connection there, since I lived in NL (Bennekom and then Wageningen) in 1980-81, when I was six years old. It was a wonderful experience, and I have many fond memories of it. I've only been back once, unfortunately (in 2002). I really need to get back there!
