Vitreous detachment

Diagnosed with vitreous detachment but my vision still meets 3rd class requirements (10/30-10/40 depending on the day). Am I legal to continue flying until my next medical?

Since your vision meets 3rd class standards (I assume you meant 20/30 and 20/40?), you don't yet have "reason to know" that you have a disqualifying condition. So my SGOTI answer would be yes. However, one of the AMEs here should be along shortly to give you an authoritative answer.

My guess is that at your next medical, they might want a full set of Humphreys fields. I had this and had to go through that, though my case was a little more complicated than a simple PVD (I had a horseshoe retinal tear and a vitreous hemorrhage as well).

Anyway, best to find out now so that you can go in prepared.

get a verbal from your eye md - be prepared to submit 8500-7 (download it) and take it to your next routine AME visit. Down yourself with any changes in condition.

Yes, I did mean 20/30-20/40. I understand the logic behind "having a reason to know" but I have looked for a specific FAA opinion/statement and haven't found much other than a reference to the tests that I should bring to my medical exam.

Well you have an answer from @lbfjrmd (Dr. Lou) above - he is one of the AMEs who frequent this board. It sounds like you're legal to continue flying unless your condition changes, and you'll need an 8500-7 to bring to your next FAA medical. That's something your eye doc will fill out, and it's a fairly comprehensive evaluation. The form tells you what tests to have done. It does include visual fields - pretty sure the FAA will only accept Humphreys and one other format I can't recall at the moment.

One of my employees had this happen at Thanksgiving. Just getting the vision cleared up now, and will take several more months (and a couple of prescription changes) as things stabilize. I worry about this, having a set of -6.0 diopter eyes; I get checked every couple of years.
