Goodyear 5.00 X 5 Wheel Part 2: Bearings and Greasing

The Cessna manual linked in my other wheel thread had a diagram for the Goodyear 5.00 X 5 wheel for tube tires. Unfortunately the bearings that were in mine did not match those in the diagram. Mine are Bower LM67048s that have an attached seal on the outer edge vs. using the separate felt seals as shown in the diagram. The installed seal covers what would ordinarily be the wider opening at the end of the rollers where grease would be applied. Is this seal removable? I was unable to find any seals or bearings online that match, and am hesitant to attempt removing the seal if that is not in the design. Otherwise, how do I grease the bearings?

Just leave the seals in place, clean and re-grease. Force the fresh grease in from the non-seal side and around the circumference of the bearing.

WD-40 works well as a solvent to clean the old grease out.
 
But wash in gasoline and blow dry before greasing. WD-40 will inhibit the grease from wetting the bearing races etc.
 
Remove the seal and take it to an industrial bearing supply house and have them match it up. Trying to clean and repack a bearing in place is a pretty hokey approach.

What would be the point in ruining the bearing by removing the integrated seal before taking it to get a replacement?
And, hokey or not, I personally don't see the point of replacing perfectly good bearings every year when all you have to do is clean and re-grease before re-installing.
 
I wasn't suggesting replacing the bearing. I was suggesting removing the seal so that the bearing could be removed to be properly cleaned and repacked. Maybe the seal would be reusable, maybe not, but seals are cheap. Buy a couple of seals from a bearing supply house and keep them on hand just in case.

EDIT:. I just re-read the first post and it almost looks like the seal is part of the bearing? I've never seen a bearing with a seal like that so please disregard. I assumed we were talking about a seal that is press fit into the hub after the bearing is installed. I'd still suggest taking it to an industrial bearing supplier such as Bearings Inc so they could have a look. They're great at finding odd bearings and seals and most towns with any manufacturing will have one.

Gerdes used those bearings with the integral seals. I had plenty of fun finding new ones for a Lake Amphib, and they weren't cheap.

I think you'd ruin the seal if you pulled it off.
