avionics upgrade

That's an interesting heresy. Why do you believe that?

I think I read somewhere online that it is not officially TSO even though they exceed the requirement for it. And you are the first person that might seems to be suggesting otherwise. I was looking at their stuff for a while there and seems to be good products. Was actually considering buying it but couldn't find anyone that actually have used it to ask about it.

I got a field approval for an iCom A210 two years ago, no one batted an eye.

im still pretty new at this so please bare with me. do you mind explain how that works? and is there a guideline as to what can be done this way?

My conversations with friends at the FAA and with my own mechanic led me to believe that installing a non-TSO comm can be done as a minor alteration. I put in a GTR200 that way.

do you know if this only applies to comm? would it be applied to something like g5s?

The heresy was actually believing that TSO is required for part 91 aircraft. Val is as good and sometimes better than anything on the market.

...We looked at KX155s, but it made no sense to install one with the price they are asking. Not to mention if the display goes out your screwed (or upgrade to the new screen which cost an arm and a leg)...
I know a of a $500 OLED replacement on the KX 155 / KX 165.
Very reputable guy doing it.

Does said "very reputable guy" have some sort of STC for it?

I ask because King does sell an LED replacement for the display, but the part is $4,000, at which point you might as well get a new radio that doesn't look like it's from the 70s/80s, and weighs less.

Wow !! Is everything “King” super expensive ?

Well... Yes. It's getting tougher to justify maintaining the King stuff. The $4K+ display replacement on the radio means that the entire radio is going to get yanked and replaced, and the $9600 quote we got for an overhaul exchange trim servo means that the autopilot is gonna get yanked too.
