After about 13 years my iPod Gen 6 160 MG Classic is taking a krap... It is the hard drive that is failing, at least that is what the diagnostic test noted with the large number of relocated and pending sectors on the SMART diagnostic section.... Wow.... can't believe I have almost 4500 hour of use on this thing... let alone the battery... as for hardware, I have to say Apple got it right.

Looking around it appears I can upgrade the disk from the magnetic drive to a quad SD mini to get more memory along with jail breaking the software to run some other open source stuff like Rockbox... not that iTunes is such a stellar performing program on a "winders" machine... not

My question here is has any done this? Or did you did you just toss yours when in kraped out? Really don't want to toss this thing, it is a solid unit and has served me well for 13 years, maybe I can get another 13 out of it...

You should celebrate the 13 years, find a dusty drawer to archive the hardware in and replace it.

Not sure what 160 MG is but my current iPhone has 256 Gigs which is more than your iPod has. Why not get a multifunction device with 21 century roots?

You know that all of those devices have an airplane mode?

(Ironic question considering this forum's audience)

Yes they do, but it is still there... when I need to shut down, I have to shut down all they way.

I have a classic I’ve been debating doing that to

My Classic iPod is also starting to give me trouble after 12 great years. The screen is getting a lot of lines in the top half making it hard to read.

I looked at eBay & they have new ones for sale but they are flipping expensive. I'm also debating what to replace it with. I'm am an avid listener to aviation podcasts as I travel. On long trips the battery last forever & I don't have to worry about using my iPhone too much & draining the battery.

I'll probably end up biting the bullet & getting another one.

I keep an old iPod Shuffle around for this purpose. iTunes still recognizes it, which I'm sure is an oversight.

You should try some AirPods. They work great but I’m assuming IPOD incompatible.

Free the wire!

BTW, I have an original firewired 20MB iPod. Upgraded the battery a couple of times and used the non-pocket sized brick longer than I should have. Things have changed so that headphones barely work with current devices. Impedance matching problem I guess.
