Thanks Crashburn. You have been very helpful. I will keep these things in mind. Originally I was going to do the private first but...I think I may be changing my mind now.

If you are an A&P with a PPL and you work for the right shop, there are opportunities to get free flight time out of your job or through the network you build. Even more so once you get the commercial.
 
I could imagine so because I used to work around an A&P that had a lot of free hours.
Yes, the Chief mechanic at my shop always test flew the A/C before returning them to the customer. I only got to taxi a few.

Also once you have some experience, there can be opportunities to retrieve or deliver customer aircraft.
Thats of course if you work in a GA shop. The other aspect is networking. You deal with pilots, occasional opportunities to get some safety pilot time. If you have the multi commercial, and a clean shirt there can be right seat time in twins and tueboprops available.

I actually got a few right seat hours in a Piper Navajo...maybe 2 hours.
