I met with folks from PK a few weeks ago and indicated I was interested in starting flight school. They spent an hour talking to me and gave me info on their classes. Went by yesterday to start and the doors are locked. I called their number and got VM. I got a text saying they were closed and hoped to open under new management.

Curious if anyone knows what is going on? A little concerned that this change wasn’t mentioned a few weeks ago when we met. Also concerned about people who were in training or bought block time on PK’s aircraft. Guess this is why you are warned to pay as you go.

I want to train out of KPMP as it is 5 minutes from home. The other schools there are factories from what I’ve heard. I just want my private pilots license. I guess I should feel fortunate I hadn’t started a few weeks ago and had the school close on me.

Very possible the people you talked to had no indication of the real financial health of the company.

You were expecting them to say, "we're going out of business next week"?

The end of the year is a good time to transfer ownership of a company. They may have simply sold out. If done properly, there should be no issue with the business continuing as is. But it won't likely be done properly!
Edit: their Facebook says that they are open now!

Of course if it was a Part 141, the sale might be held up by there being no one available at the FSDO to transfer the certificate.

Actually, I do expect honesty from people I do business with. Especially if I’m placing my life in their hands or planes. Apparently people have come to believe that truth is not important anymore.

This. I got screwed for $700 in block time I'd paid for shortly before my first flight school went TU. I heard later that my instructor never got paid a dime either. Scumbags abound.

I was visiting that area over Xmas myself. I called them to get some flying in while down there. I got a similar response via text though, and they said something about not opening again until Feb to update the aircraft. :dunno:

Id be interested to see what happens since I'm sure I'll end up down that way again at some point .

A south florida flight school went under without prior notice. I am shocked !
