This past Thanksgiving I decided to try getting an approach into ATL without filing the airport as a destination. I knew filing ATL as a destination would probably be the easiest route but I didn't want to have stop there or buy AvGas on the field. I filed an IFR flight plan with ATL as an intermediate. I got airborne and requested my clearance from Atlanta Approach: "Uhhh state intentions." I knew that pretty much the only thing allowed at ATL per the chart supplement was a full stop. No practice approaches, no low approaches, no touch and goes, no nothing! I initially wanted to see to if ATL Tower would be gracious and give me exactly what really wanted: touch and go? Tower, via Approach. Didn't approve that. Full stop taxi back? "Approved. Fly heading XXX." I'm in!!! Approach vectored me west of Atlanta for the approach to 8L, so I loaded up VTF RNAV 8L in the 430 to help me on the visual. Approach: "Advise ATIS foxtrot." Roger. I listened to the ATIS and got...Tango?!?! Woops, turns out big airports have an arrival and departure ATIS. I looked at Foreflight again and realized my mistake. A few minutes later..."Archer has information Foxtrot." I was cleared for the approach and given the switch to tower. Atlanta Tower approved my low approach and allowed me to get this video! Thanks to Atlanta Approach and Tower for being so generous!!!

So why’d you do a low pass if they approved a full stop-taxi back?
Once I was talking to tower, the low approach was approved. Before that though, I could not get that request approved when I was talking to approach. Can't say why approach couldn't get it approved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That’s a buzzkill! Still cool though...I guess.

What time of day was it? I’ve had the itch to do a full stop-taxi back down there at some point.

I believe it was around 12:30-1:00 a.m. I was the only aircraft moving on or in the vicinity of the field from what I could tell. It was the night after Thanksgiving so that probably helped a good bit. I've flown over ATL a couple times at 2-4am and there was still traffic arriving, so your milage may vary.

Congrats! I'd have asked for the option and done a touch and go, just because.

Actually, no I wouldn't have, because Approach has never allowed me inside the Bravo . . . .

I don't know if I would want to do that (full stop-taxi back)... Unless it was 1am.

I dropped my wife off there so she could catch a flight to Sydney. I probably waited at the hold short line for 20 minutes until they cleared me onto the runway.

I think @Ryanb 's question was actually "why didn't you go ahead and make a full-stop taxi back instead?". In other words, that would have been even better than a low approach.

I have landed at DFW a couple of times in light aircraft, it's pretty neat, isn't it? Both of mine were during the day and easily the hardest part of the flight was the taxi. We landed on 13R so had about a 4 nm taxi to the FBO.

:yeahthat:

TWA used to allow us to park light airplanes on the company's hangar ramp for a few hours. (KLAX) The offices were attached to the hangar. I decided it wasn't worth it when a Continental 707 almost blew me over (Piper Arrow) on taxi out. Light airplanes don't mix well at those mega-airports.
