Can I do commercial and IFR in the same check ride? Is there any advantage to this other than the check ride cost? Are there any disadvantages beyond learning both at the same time (have to hold altitudes, headings, speed closer)?

I can't see why there would necessarily be a cost advantage, the DPE has to evaluate your performance on both sets of maneuvers, as well as the knowledge items. So the DPE may very well charge for two checkrides anyway.

Also, checkrides are usually considered a fairly stressful event - and now you'd intentionally be lengthening it.

I don't see any real advantage to this approach.

I’d expect you to be paying the DPE twice. You can do them in the same day, but I would want to do a check ride immediately after the ifr ride.

Commercial and instrument are two VERY different checkrides...unless you're looking forward to an 8+ hour day for a CFI ride as being fun, I don't think I'd try to do the instrument and commercial on the same day.

Keep the stress level down ,do them, one at a time.

There’s no overlap between the instrument ride and the single-engine commercial ride. No reason to combine them.

I did my private and instrument checkrides back to back, but I already held a private certificate issued on the basis of a foreign license, so that was just a formality. I am certain you will be paying for two checkrides, and it will not save you any time other than driving to and from the airport, so it is just not worth the extra stress.

Thanks everybody. That's what I assumed but it never hurts to ask.

Commercial is a VFR ride and instrument rating is done under the hood so no overlap and no advantage.

Imagine you failed the first check ride ( formality or something else), do you really think you will be mentally set for a second
