Looking to For Gift For Prospective Pilot

After reading threads on PPL training material, I was looking to try to get my bf a gift for Christmas he could actually use in his upcoming training. I've downloaded some FAA manuals to possibly print so he will have hard copies but I was looking to buy him some other training material for his PPL. From what I've read I was considering Jepp or ASA.

Is there anything you would recommend having gone through/going through training? I can't afford to get him a headset, but I thought some training materials might be a nice thought.

I'm obviously not a pilot or aspiring so I would love some help in finding something he will like and find useful.
 
The first answer that comes to mind is "bales and bales of cash", but:

A gift card to Aircraft Spruce and Specialty or Sportys possibly

A kneeboard if he doesn't have one already.

A gleim test prep (or similar) for the written exam if he has not taken it yet


I assume he already has a giant shiny watch, ray ban aviator sunglasses, and perhaps an old leather jacket with patches celebrating his heroism over guam. :D
 
Maybe an electronic e-6b and some foggles.

Those are useful for training and relatively low cost.
 
offer to be his first passenger when he gets his license. Make a cute ticket and everything and plan a fun activity day out of it. I bet that would mean a lot to him..

Anything that says "I share your excitement about this, and you have my support" - that's something everyone in training will appreciate, either now or later!
Doesn't have to be something purchased from an aviation shop...
I once made a cake decorated with little airplanes made of marzipan. My husband thought it was awesome.

My Pilot wife gave me that book fir xmas before I started flight lessons. Great book.

And I'll add another book from a fellow forum member "Say Again Please" by Bob. My wife gave me that book for my birthday whIle I was working on my PPL...it was perfect timing.

If you really love him and you're not worried he's gonna run off with the naive 22yo CFI babe...maybe a nice headset...but only if you just know he's the type who will never quit. Plus, if you look at him "that way" you'll probably get to wear them when flying while he wears a crappy pair :)

If he needs a tablet like a iPad mini or a small android or maybe just stuff to mount his tablet.

Or a ADSB in device like a Stratus or Garmin. Some are cheaper now and very useful.

Lingierie...for you...for him... :)
 
Although it is not the most fascinating reading, a copy of the FAR/AIM publication.

Go down to the card printers and make up a half dozen “ Go Flying Free” cards in the style of a Monopoly “Chance” or “Community Chest” card. They are good for him to go flying at any time, regardless of plans. It castsnext to nothing, shows support at him, but also places a l8mit on how many times he can take off and just go fly.

There are lots of inexpensive supplies available online. A knee board ($35), 2 cheap LED flashilights from the Dollar Store, an E6B ($15), a chart plotter ($6), sun glasses (so he looks like Tom Cruise).

Printing the FAA manuals is not the best plan. The text books he will use are the same thing.

I spent money in the App store for various training apps that I found extremely helpful (Boldmethod for one) if he has an Apple device.
If he already started training, go to his school, pay for his next lesson and create a pretty postcard about it. (My best friend did that for my bday and it was such a pleasant surprise when the school's admin said today's lesson was for free thanks to your friend.)

...or any of the above others mentioned.
 
Another good one is the gleim online test bank. It's $55 and good for a year. I used to for practice exams, it has about 800 questions in the test bank and lets you go through all of them and also make timed exams in the same format as the written. I went through every question once, then took 5 practice exams and aced the written exam. Worth every bit of $55. The other expensive kits really aren't worth the money. All the material you need to study is free online.
