This is the third one of these I have gotten. Different versions. The first was the best but I laughed, showed it to my son, and left it in my SPAM folder where it was later auto-deleted.

Hi,dear user of redacted

I honestly hope that I will not graze ur heart. **** happens, life didn’t leave me a choice.I don’t hate people with special tastes, moreover I cant judge you. But,life is life,so:

First of all,I installed the particular soft on a web site with porn videos (I think you understood me).

Secondly, when u tapped on a video, soft immediately started working, all cams turned on and screen started recording, then my soft collected all contacts from emails, messengers etc.Im really proud for this soft, it makes devices act as rdp with keylogger ,exciting. This email address Ive collected from your device, I emailed u here because I think you will 100% going to check your corporative email.

Finally,I edited a split screen video, with your involvement and porn movie from your screen, its very strange. As a result,I can share this video with all your friends, colleagues, relatives etc.I think it’s a big shame for you.

But we can resolve this problem.

Well,I believe,850 USD humanely cost for mistake like this,is a fair price for our little secret. You’ll make the payment via Bitc'oin to the below address (if you don’t know this, search "how to buy B I T C O I N" in Google).

I accept only b t c (cryptocurrency),here is my btc wallet’s ADDRESS-1BQfswqUmZPVxtB1zCkszbf5EGNQ18sh1b
(case SeNsItIvE,сopy & and past'e)

U have 40 hours after reading my notification to finish transaction.I will see when u read this message,I adjusted special tracking pixel in it.This time is enough only to finalize all verifications and transaction, so you have to think fast.If I wont receive my «wage»,I will share this video with all contact Ive got from ur device.

You can ask cops for an assistance, but they wont search out me for even 100 hours, Im foreign,so think twice. If Ill receive btc-all evidence will be erased forever and I will never message you again.

U can reply, but this wont make sense,I sent you this message using my soft for anonymous messages,I don’t check the inbox after using it,cuz I contemplate about my security too.Have a nice day,I hope u will make a good solution for you.

I get several of those every week. I can't believe anyone is stupid enough to fall for them.

Rich

I'd write back, telling them I'm a freak and I love the exposure, but, if they pay me, I'd take the video off their hands...

Apparently there are people that stupid, otherwise they wouldn't keep coming... several per week here as well.

All my porn comes from Barnstormers. :)

You think that's a scam ?

Looks legit.

You think that's a scam ?

Yes. I always put a piece of black tape over my laptop camera when I visit sites where I don't want to be videoed. They're not going to get me twice!

I was looking in my spam folder, when a mail I expected didn't show, found three of these. The difference was they claimed they had hacked my email account and it did show A (not THE, but a ) password I actually had used. I racked my brain, looking at old notes I made and found, it was a pw I used many years ago for just a simple subscription to an online music site. They can scare folk, because they use actual passwords culled from sites that were not careful and got hacked. But they are usually ten years old pw, but this is a good reminder to why it is incredibly risky to use the same PW in different sites!

First reaction was "crap!". The email was similar, except they admitted they intended at first to use ransom ware but they "noticed" my history, etc, etc. "you've been a naughty boy" and all that.

I know my history and wasn't worried, but jeez..how stupid. Ever see a film where the blackmailer meets the victim and just describes the photos he has? Nope...if the moron had them, they would send some.

My wife is all worried that we are being spied on through the camera on the laptop. She tapes over everything.

You didn't know that NSA required those cameras ?

What about the cameras in microwave ovens? (I believe that was a Kellyanne Conway gem. )

I get a dozen or so of these every day—all “sent from your email address so you know you’ve been hacked”. The ones that make me laugh are in Chinese. The only way I know that they are the same is that the bitcoin wallet address is not in Chinese characters.

It's not a scam. I paid them my $850 btc and they never released the tape. I don't think.

Wait . . .

My wife received one of those recently, same thing a throwaway password used about 10 years ago. I guess that's all the 'dark web' stuff the various identity theft protection schemes are supposed to scan ;-)

You mean, right before the intended victim shoots/stabs/strangles the would-be blackmailer? :) That's my favorite outcome.

I always liked the story of the KGB getting pictures of a US businessman in Moscow, showing up in his office and dropping a photo of him banging some curvy babe and demanding he cooperate with them or they would send the photo to his wife. He picked it up, took a long look, and said: "I'll take a hundred in 8x10. The guys at the country club are gonna be jealous."

It's called sextortion email for obvious reasons. People at work who receive them tend to get inordinately upset about it, so I'm told. You can monitor the bitcoin account for activity - one recent scammer had $7500 deposited to his account in 3 days. Pretty decent pay for sending out some stoopid emails.

I like how they take this chatty "guy-to-guy" tone. like "I ain't judgin' but you gotta pay because that is just how things work..."

First of all...

Why don't I get any of those? I mean you would think

Oh by the way I just scored major Bitcoin with that wallet address, thank you!

I've owned 4 or 5 of these. Should get another, I've been Alfa-less way too long.

I'm a big fan of that design. I've owned a couple of rear-transaxle cars (Porsche 944 S2 & Corvette C6) and love the balance that layout provides. A clutch job is pretty involved, though...might be easier on the Alfa. Had a first-gen RX-7 with a Watt linkage, but its execution on that car was flawed...too much bind in roll, so when you really leaned on it the rear suspension would lose compliance and you'd get some sudden oversteer. I went with an aftermarket Panhard rod and it made the handling a lot more predictable.

I got a few of those last month. Couldn't figure out how they could access my webcam, when I don't have one... Must be that "special tracking pixel."

I saw on our police blotter that someone actually reported this scam to the local police.

Yeah, but not to worry. Perry Mason would have it all worked out and have the blackmailee free in less than an hour....

It's not impossible for a webcam to be compromised, especially if someone else owns or has administrative control over the computer. It's the non-specificity of the email itself that's a dead giveaway. An actual blackmailer would be more specific about the sites that were supposedly visited and would probably attach a few pictures of the alleged activity.

The Secret Service used to accept complaints of scam emails if money was involved. Maybe they still do. How much they did about them is questionable.

Yeah, I had a laugh at my three emails like that. "At first I was just going to ransomware, but then I saw your history and pictures", etc.
But later in it too, "you can trust me, I am not going to keep coming back for more, I will delete..." etc.

I was tempted to write back "hey, you sound like a stand-up guy. Maybe after I pay you the blackmail, we could go out and grab a beer sometime, eh?"

and "hey dummy, that email you sent me, you forget to delete the metadata in the header fully, so now I know where you live, and boy, I'm thinking you are going to have a bad time from now on..."

Because these scammers are not tech savvy according to their descriptions of how they "infected" my "server".

I like the way this guy handled the scammer that was trying to "give" him a car and $$millions. Maybe it would work with these scammers too, if they're lying about not getting reply email.

Well, okay, then! :)

A more elaborate recommended reply to this particular scammer might be:

I think you may be selling these pictures and recordings a bit short. I have a buyer who will pay me $10,000 for them. Please send me what you have, I'll make the sale, and then I'll cut you in for half. Please include your bank account number and password so that I can make the $5,000 deposit into your account. Nice doing business with you!

I'd say post it.... I'll consider it a job application and put that Ron Jeremy to shame.

Naw. Perry Mason only took cases where the defendant was innocent (and charged with murder). Blackmailers were small potatoes by comparison. :D
