KJVL 2/2/08 - Midwest Get-together

Tony and I officially scrubbed the trip for today. :(

There's a chance he'll make it there tomorrow.

Fly safely,

Matthew

There is a ramp area near the Runway 26 approach end. On the south side of the ram, opposite the fuel pumps, is NIFC. I'll wait in there. What tail number will you have?

My usual - the arrow N3904X

Well, bummer. Dad was looking for somewhere to go today, so we were gonna bop up there in the RV. Of course any time we plan something, the weather goes FUBAR.

Oh well... If I can talk Rachel into calling in sick to work tomorrow, maybe we'll actually *gasp* rent a plane and head up that way. ;)

OK.. Since this has 'officially' been moved to Sunday, what does the attendance list look like now?

1. Chris, Tony (working on Rachel & Leah) C-182RG N5274S
2. Barry, Scott PA28-181 N3904X

4. Scott (drizz) ?+1? C-152
5. Stan (nddons)
6. Grant, Leslie C-210

They didn't have a chance to check the static system on the 210, so if we fly it'll be in the 182. However, it's not looking much (if any better) for tomorrow, either. :

These are comparable for what they were forecasting for today, and this is what we have now at Janesville:

and pireps for the area are showing icing.

It's definitely good that we called the flying for today!

i guess we'll just have to see in the morning.

I'm guessing that we'll be driving at this point. Scott/Barry, if you want we can pick you up on the way up and the 4 of us can do the SUV. More gas efficient that way, too!

Well right now, the only problem seems to be visibility - they're calling for ground fog at DPA at 9:00am - not sure when its disipating. Ceilings look okay. I'll check again later and then tomorrow morning as well.

To be honest Grant, if I have to drive I'll probably stay home with my wife for breakfast. It just takes so much longer.

I can understand that. Since I instigated this thing though, I think I'll plan on doing the drive if it's not flyable. Scott, if you want us to pick you up and Barry opts not to fly, let me know and we can make arrangements to meet and carpool. You have my cell, and I just left you a VM. Since Barry's not going, if someone else in the area wants a ride, drop me a PM.

To clear up a potential misunderstanding, I said I wouldn't go if I have to drive. Still haven't scrubbed the idea of flying though.

It's a long drive for youse two. It's an hour or less for me.

See what you started?

BTW, IT'S STUPID BOWL SUNDAY!

Not that I care, other than I'd like to see the Pats set a record that will never be touched again.

Oh, the irony. As luck would have it, I need to be in Waukesha first thing Monday morning for work, and the best the airlines could do is a Sunday afternoon departure (from DSM). It would be pretty tough for me to make it to Janesville on Sunday and still get home in time to fly back in a CRJ (Arguably the only aircraft with less cabin space than a 140. Ironically, I probably log more hours in CRJ cabins than in my 140.).

Matt,

Why not fly the 140 to JVL on Sunday, and just continue to UES afterwards? (assuming the wx doesn't suck) There's no airline service closer than MKE, and if ya gotta leave Sunday anyway, ya might as well do it in tail-draggin' style!

For what it's worth, I'm in for Sunday if the weather doesn't suck. It is supposed to be cloudy, but "over 12,000" at JVL according to USAirNet while the TAF's for MSN and RFD are a different story. Hmmm.

Just spoke to Grant. If it is a no fly I am still in and would be willing to drive. I can carpool with Mike if you are interested.

Barry what time would you cancel the flight if it needs to be done?

You're right, I should have said "not going in the car". I'm still hoping you can fly up tomorrow.

Barry what time would you cancel the flight if it needs to be done?

Well, if I'm going to get you around 9:00am I would usually be off for the airport about 7:45/8:00 - I suppose if its fog I could delay to see about the burn off. Don't want to screw up your lift by waiting though - Grant, what time would you be leaving if you were driving?

I would suggest that if I'm still not in a position to confirm I'm flying by the time Grant leaves that you may want to hook up with him. If I get there later I could always give you a flight back.

If we drive, Leslie and I will be leaving around 7:30, and expect to be at Janesville between 9:30 and 10:00. We'll be doing I88 to I39. Scott and I talked and, if he drives, he'll go directly there, maybe with Mike. If anyone else from the western suburbs wants to ride with us, let me know. We'll make the call around 0700 whether we fly or drive.

The forecast for 9:00am says fog. Not sure how long it will last. At the moment I'd suggest y'all drive. I'll see if I can get there.

The USAirNet forecast does, but the TAF doesn't. Still a tossup, though I'm afraid it's a two-headed coin! :)

If the airport is VFR, I'll be there. From the forcasts, my guess is about 10:00am. Citabria N614AC.

Jesse, can you get up here? I think I can go Sunday.
I appreciate the offer Lance. I won't be able to make it up there though. I'm trying to save for my instrument.

Weather permitting, ApacheBob will be at JVL at 10 am. Cherokee 140...N1477X. We have to leave just after noon. Hope to see you there.
We have room for one in the back seat. We will be departing ARR at 9:15 am.:blueplane:
10. ApacheBob and Steve A.

Cool. Looks like it'll be quite a turnout. We'll make the fly/drive decision around 7:00AM.

the icing potential for 6 AM is nil for iowa, northern illinois, and most of wisconsin for all altitudes. Dont be surprised if 4 Iowans show up in a 182RG. Will check here between 7 and 8 to make sure that there will be others there to eat with.

shoot its practically going to be VFR!

Damn, it looks like it's getting worse. On the good side, I should be able to be on time if I fly my Ford.

Scott, you gonna drive? Wanna hook up? PM me.

I'm planning to drive. Can I bring Pancho?

Looks like I'll scrub guys - they just updated the TAF at DPA - ceilings 400-600 ft until 10:00am, then up to 1,000, visibility 2-3 miles in mist.

Weather doesn't actually improve until after noon.

But wait, tony.. It gets better later in the morning! We could still make it!!

7am (13Z)-9am CST (15Z)temporarily visibility 3/4 mile, mist, 200 feet overcast

:no::no::no::no:

Bummer... Ya'll have fun up there! See ya' next time..

Actually, it's getting better. MSN's 0024 TAF showed BKN025, while the 0606 TAF shows SCT015 BKN200.

I'll be there in N271G.
Looking better in MSN maybe, but not down here. I'm trying to convince myself to fly it. Because of that, we'll be flying the Acura. I am NOT going to get myself caught in get-there-itis, especially when I haven't done any serious flying in months!

I am going to have to back out. Sharon can't get a sub for her Sunday School class. Maybe next time.

So we're looking at Mike, Scott, Leslie, me, Stan, Buzz? ApacheBob & Steve (probably not), Kent, Kate?, Pete. Others?

We're about to start up the Acura, and should be there 10:00ish.
