CFI question

My boyfriend has his sport pilot rating with his class c, d, tailwheel and seaplane endorsements and approx 500 hours. We just bought a Grumman Cheetah and so he Needs his private ticket. My question is what doesn’t he need to be able to fly the cheetah by himself to practice for checkride? Will he need to be soloed with a millieage constraint or does he just need some kind of endorsement in a non Lsa airplane/single engine?

He has his night time logged but still needs his 3 hour foggle time to be able to take his checkride. The fars read to me like he needs to get soloed and can only travel within 25 ,miles of home airport but that just seems so silly as he has already proven his understanding of weather and airspace on his sport checkride.

He needs a 61.31(d)(2) solo endorsement. The "student pilot" endorsements are inapplicable because, as a cerificated sport pilot, he is not a "student pilot."

Doesn’t basic med / drivers license medical cover him for the medical?

Forgot one. According to a 2009 Chief Counsel opinion, the additional category/class solo also requires a flight review.

BasicMed requires there have been at least one FAA medical certificate after July 2006. Unless he got one for some reason as a student pilot, he will still need one.

You will need that endorsement if you solo. Lots of folks don't solo in twins due to insurance limitations. It is the original reason for the 61.129 "performing the duties..." substitute fir solo.

The CFI dummy thing only works for the commercial certificate. If you are going to get your private in a twin, you need to be able to solo it.

True. I was not suggesting anything different, although insurance requirements might prevent it from a practical standpoint.
